Moravian claims 6-3 win over men's tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Moravian won the first five matches of Saturday's Landmark Conference meeting with the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team, before the Blue Jays salvaged three singles wins in a 6-3 defeat.

Nathan Dowling, Evan Hinkley and Matthew Hornbaker each captured wins for the Blue Jays, who fell to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the Landmark.

Dowling went back-and-forth with Giovanni Lombardi at No. 3 singles, taking the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (11), before holding on 7-5 in the second for a straight set victory.

Hinkley knocked off Issac Shefer 6-3, 6-0 at fifth singles and Matthew Hornbaker topped C.J. Widdifield 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4.

Moravian (12-5, 4-3 Landmark), fighting for one of the final spots in the Landmark Conference Championships, swept doubles. The No. 3 team of Hinkley and Marty Rodgers came closest to stealing a match, falling just short, 8-6, against Peter Demyan and Schefer.

The Blue Jays play an exhibition match Sunday at Harford Community College. The Fighting Owls, members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) are not a four-year degree granting institution, thus team and individual win-loss records from tomorrow's match will not count towards individual and career records. Match time in Bel Air, Md., is scheduled for noon.
