Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Blue Jays rally to beat Scranton, earn No. 1 seed in Landmark Champs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Scranton, the only remaining team with a shot to keep the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team from its second straight undefeated regular season run through the Landmark Conference, and the league's No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, threw a scare into the Blue Jays on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.

The Royals jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the battle-tested Blue Jays scored eight straight and shut down the visitors in the third quarter to pull out a 9-7 victory.

Elizabethtown (11-4, 6-0 Landmark) opened the scoring just 1:20 into the game when Jason Clough finished off a pass from Joe Clark. The remainder of the quarter belonged to the Royals (11-4, 4-1 Landmark).

Alec Mikrut scored twice, once a man up and once with 0.3 seconds left, as Scranton took a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Royals weren't done. Nicholas Swift set up Brad Elkin's goal less than two minutes into the second as Scranton's lead grew to four.

E-town got a bit of momentum late in the second when Phil Kyger scored his first of three on the day with 3:03 to go, and the Blue Jays turned it into a third-quarter tidal wave.

Face-off specialist Matt Rucci fed Clark for his 33rd goal of the campaign just eight seconds into the third, sending E-town on its way to outscoring the Royals 6-0 in the period.

Clark and Kyger each had a pair of goals during the quarter. Mike Specht and Jordan Bowser also tallied for the Blue and Gray.

Freshman Jeremy Klipple had a profound impact on the game, yet again. The Purcellville, Va., native caused two of his game-high five turnovers in the third as the Royals gave it away five times to none for Elizabethtown. Klipple tied his career-high for CTOs in a game, which he just set against Washington and Lee back on Tuesday, and has now recorded 17 over his last four contests (4.25/game).

Kyger's hat trick goal with 1:43 left in the third put the Blue Jays up 8-5 heading to the fourth. Clough would find a way to beat Scranton goalie Nicholas McKaba (seven saves) for a second time to finish an 8-0 run for the Jays with 10:57 to play.

Clark (2 goals, 2 assists) and Kyger (3 goals, 1 assist) each put up four-point performances. Clark drew within seven goals of becoming the program's fourth career 100-goal scorer. Mike Specht added three on a goal and two assists.

The Blue Jays forced 11 Scranton turnovers, led by Klipple's five. Luke Stephens had two, while Bowser, Jake Snyder, Mike Tangredi and Michael Hofstedt all registered one in front of goalie Davis Miracle, who made six saves.

Elizabethtown extended its regular season unbeaten streak in the Landmark to 13 games and will host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, May 4, with an opponent and time to be determined.

The Royals' Swift produced three points on two goals and an assist. Swift unleashed a team-high seven shots, with teammates Mikrut (two goals) and Elkin firing six each. Scranton outshot E-town by a slim 32-30 margin and both teams picked up 32 ground balls.

Adam Drury won 11-of-19 face-offs for the visitors, which was countered by an 8-of-16 afternoon from the Blue Jays' Rucci. Rucci and Kyger scooped up six ground balls apiece to pace Elizabethtown.

Prior to Saturday's game, the men's lacrosse team honored its nine-man senior class. Players recognized in the ceremony were Bowser, Jake Evans (1 GB), Bobby Hunter, Miracle, Steve Nutting (3 GB), Pat Scott, Snyder, Tangredi and Jimmy Waters (3 GB).

The Blue Jays will close the regular season with a non-conference game at Kean next Saturday at 1 p.m.
