McGill, Rhodes help softball earn split at Drew

MADISON, N.J. - Maeve McGill and Mara Rhodes went a combined 5-for-7 for the Elizabethtown College softball team in its opening game at Drew on Saturday to help E-town end it in six innings with an 11-1 final. The Blue Jays would wind up with a split against the Rangers as the hosts prevailed in game two, 2-1.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 11, Drew 1 (F/6)
Elizabethtown (12-22, 3-7 Landmark) found itself down a run after the first inning, but it would be the only run allowed by Amber Sergas, which was unearned.

McGill got the Jays going in the second with a two-run single to left field, driving in Marissa Kramer and Kelsey Brown. Kirstin Blass, the next batter, tripled to right center to bring McGill home as E-town back in front 3-1.

Rhodes tacked on another run for the Blue Jays in the fifth with an RBI base hit to center.

Elizabethtown's offense really exploded in the sixth to the tune of seven runs off Drew (12-18, 2-8 Landmark) pitching.

First, Emma Varrato hit a bases-clearing double to center field to score Nicole Heckert, Blass, and McGill. Rhodes tripled to left center, which also cleared the bases for another three runs. McGill added the seventh run of the inning for EC with a base knock and an RBI.

Sergas put up goose eggs from the second inning on and wound up throwing all six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out two.

Game 2: Drew 2, Elizabethtown 1
Kelsey Brown put E-town up 1-0 in the first inning in game two with an RBI single to left field as Varrato scored on the hit.

The Blue Jays would lead through their half of the fifth behind Ashley Hullihan, who also pitched six innings.

The Rangers would grab two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead into the final two innings. Despite being outhit 7-6 by E-town, Drew held on to get the split and avoid the sweep.

Varrato went 3-for-3 in game two to lead the Jays.

The softball team will host Messiah on Tuesday, April 26 for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
