Leads slip away from softball in losses to Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College softball team held leads in both games at Ursinus on Thursday afternoon in a makeup non-conference doubleheader, but fell in both to the Bears by scores of 6-5 and 9-7. E-town had leads of 2-0 in game one and 7-5 in game two. Nicole Heckert was one of several Blue Jays to register three hits on the day.

Game 1: Ursinus 6, Elizabethtown 5
Heckert led off the first game of the afternoon with a single. Mara Rhodes reached on an error and Emma Varrato singled to right center as the first three Elizabethtown (11-21) batters reached base. Christina Dark made it four with a two-RBI double to left center to score Heckert and Rhodes. E-town led 2-0 going into the bottom half of the inning.

Ursinus (12-16) took the lead with back-to-back two-out singles and led 3-2 after one.

Varrato triple to right center in the fifth with the Jays down 4-2. Rhodes and Maeve McGill were able to score on the play, which tied the game at 4-4. The Bears pulled back ahead in the next half inning with an RBI single.

Kelsey Brown was on third base in the sixth with two outs and Megan Elmer delivered a clutch hit right when Elizabethtown needed it. Elmer singled to right center to plate Brown.

Ursinus matched that run with one of its own in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead into the seventh. The Bears recorded the final three outs to take game one.

Game 2: Ursinus 9, Elizabethtown 7
A four-run second inning had the Blue Jays up 4-0. Brown scored on a wild pitch, Nicole Heckert had a RBI base hit to left field, and Rhodes scored two with a double to left center. Nicole Heckert and Heather Heckert scored on Rhodes' two-bagger.

Ursinus picked away at the Blue Jay lead, nabbing two runs in the second and another in the third. The Bears trailed 4-3 going into the fourth.

Dark extended the lead to 6-3 after sending a double to left center that saw Rhodes and McGill cross home plate.

The Bears wouldn't go away as they scored a pair in the fifth to once again cut the lead to one, 6-5.

Brown picked up an RBI in the sixth with a base knock up the middle to score Rhodes. Elizabethtown led 7-5 after its own half of the inning.

Ursinus put up its own four-run inning and right when it needed to in the bottom of the sixth to take its first lead of game two. The Blue Jays were unable to generate anything in the top of the seventh and dropped the second game, 9-7.

N. Heckert, Rhodes, and Dark each had two hits apiece to lead E-town in game two. Rhodes and Dark had two RBIs each.
