Jays start Landmark slate with 5-4 win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Elizabethtown men's tennis took control late in singles play, edging Drew, 5-4, on the road Saturday afternoon in its Landmark Conference opener.

Nathan Dowling, Matthew Hornbaker and Nick Strobel each won twice for the Blue Jays (3-3, 1-0 Landmark), who extended their unbeaten streak to three matches.

Dowling and Hornbaker combined to dump the Rangers' Cole Leckburg and Nick Lantieri 8-1 at second doubles to put E-town in front early.

The Jays carried a 2-1 lead to singles after Evan Hinkley and Strobel took down Chris Morville and Chris Thompson, 8-3, at third doubles. Drew stole a point at No. 1, where Adam Clark and Will Morrison doubled up Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris, 8-4.

Hornbaker won his third consecutive singles match, 6-3, 6-0 over Morville at No. 4, but Drew (3-5, 0-1 Landmark) came back to tie the match by claiming the top two flights.

Dowling clawed his way to a 7-5, 7-6 (8) victory against Lantieri at third singles to put the Blue and Gray ahead 4-3 and Strobel locked up the win by shutting down Leckburg 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to play at Merchant Marine Sunday at 11 a.m.
