Blue Jays erupt for season-high 17 goals in win over Merchant Marine

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Jimmy Waters registered seven points and Dan Bednarik scored five goals as Elizabethtown men's lacrosse set a season-high in goals during Saturday's 17-10 Landmark Conference win over Merchant Marine at Wolf Field.

Waters set new career-highs in points and assists (four), while Bednarik surpassed new career marks in goals and points (five).

Elizabethtown (8-3, 3-0 Landmark), which went almost five years between games in which four players scored hat tricks in the same contest, has now done it twice in its last three games following Saturday's win. Bednarik was joined by Waters, Jason Clough and Phil Kyger in lighting up the scoreboard.

Trying to avoid its third loss in as many all-time meetings with the Blue Jays, Merchant Marine (7-2, 1-1) opened a 4-2 lead with 9:50 to go in the first half. Nick Treon, Pat Coll and Mike Rodriguez scored consecutive goals to open the second quarter for the visitors.

The last four minutes of the half belonged to the Jays, however. Bednarik found the back of the net off the pass of Nick Specht at 8:32 and then scored again, unassisted, 38 seconds later to pull E-town even, 4-4.

Coll, the Landmark leader in goals, netted his 35th of the season at 7:17 to briefly put the Mariners back in front, but the Blue Jay tidal wave came crashing down a few minutes later.

Waters scored his 11th with just under five minutes to play in the half, followed by two more from Bednarik and two from Kyger. Kyger's second came with five-tenths of a second left in the quarter and sent Elizabethtown to the locker room with a 9-5 halftime lead.

E-town enjoyed its highest scoring quarter of the season by outscoring USMMA 7-4 in the second. The Blue Jays were responsible for the final five goals of the period and extended their run to 6-0 with Bednarik's fifth of the day, from Waters, at 11:33 of the third.

Clough took over in the fourth, scoring three times in the span of 8:26. Mike Specht was one of six goal scorers for the Blue and Gray, finishing with two. Cody Larkin also had a goal, while Nick Specht assisted on a pair of goals.

Elizabethtown put up a season-high 64 shots (37 on goal) and grabbed a season-high 53 ground balls.

Matt Rucci led all Jays with seven ground balls after winning 14-of-27 face-offs. The 14 wins were the second most of his career. Mike Specht and Larkin had six GBs apiece, and Clough five. Eleven different players got in on the act in forcing 12 of Merchant Marine's 21 turnovers.

Mariners goalie Kevin Young turned away 20 Elizabethtown shots. USMMA was led on the offensive end by Coll's hat trick and Nick Treon's four points (1 goal, 3 assists).

Davis Miracle made eight saves for the hosts, improving his season record to 7-3 in the process.

The Blue Jays will take on Goucher next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Wolf Field.
