Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse drops thriller to Washington and Lee on late goal

RADNOR, Pa. – Max Hutson scooped up a loose ball right in front of the cage and scored the game-winner with 24.6 seconds left to help Washington and Lee top the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team, 10-9, Tuesday evening at Cabrini College.

E-town played arguably its best game of the season, but fell for the first time in seven games. The Generals came into the game riding an eight-game winning streak that included an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over nationally-ranked No. 16 Lynchburg, and were receiving votes in the latest USILA/Nike Division III Coaches Poll.

The Blue Jays (10-4) scored the first quarter's only goal, as Cody Larkin ripped a shot by Wyatt Devine with 3:56 to go.

Jason Clough increased the lead to 2-0 1:19 into the second off a feed from Joe Clark, and the Jays' regained a two-goal lead, 3-1, when Dan Bednarik found the back of the net, unassisted, at 6:09 of the second.

Even when the Generals (11-2) made their pushes, head coach Drew Delaney and the 2015 Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year had their guys focused and ready to respond.

W&L got goals from four different scorers during a 5:45 stretch that concluded the second quarter and lasted into the early third, to take a 5-3 lead.

Clark, Clough and Bednarik all scored third quarter goals to keep Elizabethtown down just a goal, 7-6, heading to the fourth.

The Blue and Gray looked poised to pull off its biggest win of the season following a three-goal run to start the fourth.

Mike Specht netted his 20th marker of the year at the 13:36 mark and set up Clark's second of the night with 7:38 left. The Generals were held off the scoresheet for more than 10 minutes and trailed 8-7.

Phil Kyger's shot with 5:28 to play deflected off a W&L defender and in for a two-goal lead that looked like it might be enough. It wasn't, however.

Face-off specialist Jack Clarke sprinted down the middle of the field and beat Davis Miracle with an answer 11 seconds later. The Generals tied it with 3:51 to go on a goal by Joe Perrella.

Elizabethtown had its shot late when Jake Snyder knocked the ball away from A.J. Witherell and raced down the field. The Blue Jays took a timeout with under 90 seconds left in regulation, trying to set up a look to win it.

A pass from behind the net by Mike Specht would elude Joe Clark, enabling the Generals to get one more look.

Two defenders converged on W&L's Graeme Weaver and knocked the ball loose with just under 30 seconds left, but Hutson was in the right place at the right time to pick up the ground ball and evade Miracle from in close for the winner.

Reigning Landmark Defensive Athlete of the Week Jeremy Klipple, two games removed from tying a career-high in caused turnovers, set a new high with five. The Jays hounded the Generals into 17 turnovers, forcing 11 of them.

Snyder added three caused turnovers and Matt Stewart had a career night at the face-off dot, winning 10-of-16.

Miracle made six saves for the Blue Jays, while Devine was credited with five.

Bednarik and Clark paced the offense, each scoring three points on two goals and an assist. Clough also had a multi-goal game, while Mike Specht totaled a goal and a helper.

Elizabethtown can clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championships with a win on Senior Day against Scranton Saturday. Face-off from Wolf Field is set for 1 p.m.
