Kramer hits first homer, Jays drop two at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College softball team had leads in both games at Scranton Sunday afternoon as the teams were finally able to make up their doubleheader after several postponements. The Royals got the better of the Blue Jays in each game, winning by finals of 8-5 and 10-7.

Game 1: Scranton 8, Elizabethtown 5
Christina Dark put Elizabethtown (11-19, 2-6 Landmark) ahead 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI double to right center to score Kirstin Blass. Dark's hit came on a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the inning.

A defensive error for the Jays led to a Scranton (14-10, 4-4 Landmark) run in the second to tie the game. Two more runs in the third inning gave the Royals a 3-1 lead.

Mara Rhodes singled home Emily Nelson in the top of the fourth to get one of those runs back. E-town would regain the lead on Maeve McGill's two-RBI single up the middle. Rhodes and Marissa Kramer scored on the play.

The lead evaporated quickly as Scranton tacked on a solo homerun in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game a second time.

Kramer knocked home a run in the fifth as the Jays climbed back on top, 5-4. Kramer double to score Emma Varrato.

E-town was unable to close it out as the Royals posted a four-run sixth inning to retake the lead 8-5 going into the seventh. The Blue Jays went down in order in the seventh.

Game 2: Scranton 10, Elizabethtown 7
Scranton was up 3-0 by the end of the second inning, but Elizabethtown was able to get back into it with one swing of the bat. Dark singled through the left side in the third to score two runs to make it a 3-2 game.

The Royals were held scoreless in the third and fourth, and in the fifth, Varrato sent an RBI double down the left field line to bring home Blass, which tied the game 3-3. Dark drove in her third run of game two in the fifth as E-town grabbed its first lead of the game.

Nicole Heckert hit a sac fly to center to score McGill from third. Elizabethtown was up 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Like in game one, the final two innings proved detrimental for the Blue Jays. Scranton had seven runs cross the plate in the sixth to double up the score at 10-5.

In a last-ditch effort to get back into the game and try and force extra innings, Kramer hit her first career home run to left field, a two-run shot, to make it 10-7. The hole was a little too deep, though, as Scranton closed it out for the win.

Dark went 3-for-4 in both games and had a combined four RBIs on the day. Kramer was the only other Blue Jay to have at least an RBI in each game.

The softball team remains on the road and will travel to face Ursinus on Thursday, April 21.
