Men's tennis splits weekend with victory at Misericordia Sunday

ELIZABETHTOWN/DALLAS, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team bounced back from Saturday's 6-3 Landmark Conference home loss to Catholic with a commanding 8-1 victory Sunday at Misericordia.

The Blue Jays authored one of their most complete victories of the season against the Cougars (2-3).

Nos. 2 and 3 doubles posted blow out victories. Nathan Dowling and Matthew Hornbaker whitewashed Alec Rodway and Tristan Snyder 8-0 at second doubles, while the Jays' third duo of Evan Hinkley and Nick Strobel dropped just one game in an 8-1 win.

Elizabethtown's (5-7) No. 1 team of Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris completed the doubles sweep by holding on for an 8-6 win over Corey Dulsky and Tony Goodall.

Machalick earned his 20th career singles win in a top flight matchup against Dulsky 6-1, 6-3, while Hinkley captured his 40th career combined victory 6-3, 6-0 over Rodway at fifth singles.

Caris downed Christian Pugliese 6-3, 6-0 at second singles, Hornbaker turned back Snyder 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and Strobel took care of Samarth Shah 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

Misericordia earned its only point at No. 3 from Goodall, but E-town's Nathan Dowling forced the match to a super tiebreaker after rallying from a set down to take the second 6-4 in a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 defeat.

In Saturday's loss to Catholic that dropped the Blue Jays to 2-3 in the Landmark, Hinkley and Strobel pushed past the Cardinals' (5-6, 2-2 Landmark) Matt Holtschneider and Rob Alexander 9-8 (3) in a tiebreaker at third doubles.

Dowling went three sets again, topping Holtschneider in their third singles match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and Strobel beat Ted Tiu 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.

Elizabethtown travels to Goucher Wednesday for a meeting with the Landmark Conference's lone remaining unbeaten team. First serve is at 3:30 p.m.
