Hullihan one-hits Diplomats, softball splits with F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. - Ashley Hullihan turned in her best pitching performance for the Elizabethtown College softball team in game one Thursday afternoon at Franklin & Marshall. Hullihan gave up no runs for her first complete game shutout of the season and the Blue Jays took the first game from the Diplomats, 3-0. F&M replicated the outcome for game two, shutting out E-town 5-0 to earn a split.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 3, Franklin & Marshall 0
Hullihan had allowed one run three different times so far this season, but Thursday was the day the junior shut the opposition down. Aside from Megan Ryan's single in the second inning, Franklin & Marshall (13-11) couldn't get anything going as Hullihan held them in check. Ryan was the final Diplomats' batter to reach base.

Elizabethtown (11-17) had a couple chances early, but left runners stranded. The Jays finally struck in the fourth, which started off with a Kelsey Brown single to left center. Hullihan reached on an error with Brown at third and Mara Rhodes at second that allowed Brown to score for the game's first run. A batter later, Maeve McGill singled to right field to plate Rhodes. The Blue Jays led 2-0 by the end of the fourth.

Nicole Heckert singled to second base with an out in the seventh. Emma Varrato followed with a single of her own and took second on the throw with Heckert advancing to third. Christina Dark picked up an RBI and an insurance run for E-town with a base knock to center to score Heckert from third.

Hullihan got a ground out, line out, and fly out to end the game. She improved to 6-5 on the season. Kirstin Blass and Varrato both had two hits apiece for the Jays.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 5, Elizabethtown 0
The Diplomats reversed course in game two, producing five runs on seven hits. Isabel Schaefer scattered six hits over seven innings and kept Elizabethtown off the board. She struck out six.

Katie Wenger hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the first to give F&M an early 1-0 lead. The Diplomats added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Long that scored Kelly Van O'Linda.

E-town had a hit in each of the first two innings, but Schaefer got around them to retire the side without the Blue Jays crossing the plate. EC went down in order in the third, fourth, and fifth, until Varrato's single to center in the sixth with two outs.

Brown singled to lead off the seventh as Elizabethtown attempted to get back into the game. Marissa Kramer and Rhodes were on base with only one out, but Schaefer recorded the final two outs to end any comeback thoughts the Jays may have had.

Brown and Rhodes each had two hits to lead E-town in game two. Amber Sergas threw all six innings, giving up five runs and striking out seven in the loss.

The softball team will play at Scranton for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 17 beginning at 1 p.m.
