Brown brings in career high five RBIs, softball splits with Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Kelsey Brown had five RBIs on the season going into Sunday's Landmark Conference doubleheader between the Elizabethtown College softball team and Juniata. Brown doubled her season total in game one with a new single-game career high. E-town took game one 8-2, but fell 7-4 in the second game.

GAME 1: Elizabethtown 8, Juniata 2
Elizabethtown's (10-16, 2-4 Landmark) first two batters were retired in the top of the first, but Emma Varrato doubled to left field to keep the inning going before Christina Dark was hit by a pitch. A full count with two outs, Kelsey Brown delivered a two-RBI double to give E-town an early 2-0 lead.

The Jays left a runner stranded at third in the second, but were able to score in each of the following four innings to stretch the lead.

Brown smacked a home run, her first of the season, to plate Dark. Dark had doubled before Brown's at-bat. The Blue Jays were up 4-0 at that point.

Amber Sergas had a no-hitter going through the third inning, but Juniata (11-13, 2-4 Landmark) was able to break it up in the fourth with a single. The Eagles managed a run off Sergas in the inning, but that was after E-town put two more on the board in the top half.

Mara Rhodes walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt. Maeve McGill singled to center to ship Rhodes up to third. Kirstin Blass singled home Rhodes on a 0-1 count. Nicole Heckert had the third straight single of the inning and a defensive error on the play allowed McGill to score.

Brown secured her third hit of game one with a double to center field. A wild pitch had two Jays in scoring position with an out in the inning, and Sergas was able to help her own cause with a sac fly RBI to score Marissa Kramer.

Nicole Heckert hit a one-out double in the top of the sixth to put yet another Elizabethtown runner in scoring position. Varrato's ground out moved Heckert up to third, and after Dark was hit by another pitch, Brown registered her new single-game career high fifth RBI with a single through the left side for a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate.

Up 8-2 in the seventh, Sergas retired the side in order and ended the game with a swinging strikeout for her fourth win of the season.

Seven of the Jays' nine starters had at least a hit, led by Brown's four. Heckert and McGill both had two apiece, while Blass, Varrato, Dark, Rhodes, and Sergas all had one. Sergas struck out five in her complete game victory.

GAME 2: Juniata 7, Elizabethtown 4
Elizabethtown's bats were slow to get going in game two as Juniata jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead after two innings. The Eagles had eight hits between the two innings after only recording three in the first game.

The Blue Jays did not lay down for Juniata, though, as they scrapped their way back into it.

E-town got a run back in the third as Varrato singled and a defensive error allowed Blass to score from second.

Two scoreless innings from Nicole Fullerton allowed EC a chance to get even closer, and they did in the fifth.

Blass and Nicole Heckert, the first two batters of the inning, got on base. Varrato doubled to left center to score Blass, which made it 7-2. Dark, with runners on second and third, singled up the middle to bring home both and cut the deficit to 7-4.

Juniata would hold Elizabethtown over the final three innings to go on to the 7-4 victory and earn the split with the Blue Jays.
