Baseball drops home opener to Franklin & Marshall

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Blue Jays' bats were kept in check Tuesday, as three Franklin & Marshall pitchers combined to allow just four hits in a 4-1 victory for the Diplomats at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

F&M starter Mike Androconis and E-town senior Dylan Manning traded zeros over the course of the first three innings, but the Diplomats (2-3) led off the fourth with back-to-back solo home runs by David Iacobucci and Mike Smeriglio to pull in front 2-0.

Androconis faced one batter over the minimum through five innings and allowed one hit –a single by James Kantner to lead off the third– before giving way to Mike Glavin.

The Diplomats added to their lead with two more runs in the seventh, courtesy of RBI singles from Brett Poniros and Smeriglio.

Elizabethtown (6-4) got on the board in the eighth against Glavin using another Kantner lead off single and a run-scoring triple off the bat of Kyle Fackler, but could muster no more. F&M's Andrew Mascis worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

Fackler and Kantner had the Jays' only hits of the afternoon, each finishing with two. Kantner was 2-for-3 with a run scored; Fackler finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Shortstop Ryan Shirk drew a pair of walks.

Smeriglio collected a pair of hits and RBIs for the Diplomats. Matt Mezansky and Luke Seib, who followed Smeriglio in the lineup, also registered two hits apiece.

Manning took the loss, giving up six hits and two runs in five innings. Collin McGovern threw a scoreless sixth. Jay Singer and Zack Tomasko did the same in the eighth and ninth.

E-town will face Stevenson in a non-conference doubleheader at Boyd Stadium Saturday beginning at noon.
