Softball holds off Ursinus to clinch winning record on Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Elizabethtown College softball team will leave Florida with a 6-4 record after splitting on the final day of its spring break trip. Despite a gem from Amber Sergas, E-town fell 2-0 to St. John Fisher, but rebounded for a 4-2 win over Ursinus to close out the trip with a win.

Game 1: St. John Fisher 2, Elizabethtown 0

Sergas, looking to improve to 3-1 on the young season, allowed just two hits over seven innings, but Elizabethtown (6-4) couldn't provide any offense for the freshman.

E-town outhit SJF 4-2, but Hallie Schoff stifled the Blue Jays enough to get by without allowing a run. The Jays had a chance in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded, but a ground out to Schoff ended the scoring threat. Mara Rhodes and Kelsey Brown hit singles in the inning, but EC was unable to do anything with them.

St. John Fisher (6-1) got both of its runs in the top of the third, both as the result of Elizabethtown errors.

Rhodes, Brown, Sergas, and Nicole Fullerton had the hits for the Blue Jays.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 4, Ursinus 2

The Jays' final game went much different than its opening contest of the day.

Ashley Hullihan gave up six hits in five innings, but only the two runs (zero earned) while striking out a pair to remain perfect on the year at 3-0.

Elizabethtown scored runs in the first three innings to establish control with a 4-0 lead. Hullihan ran into a little bit of trouble in the fifth as the Bears got a two-out, two-RBI triple to halve the lead, but Hullihan recorded a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

Sergas came on to pitch the final two innings to get her first career save.

Emma Varrato supplied the game's first run with a double to left, scoring Kirstin Blass on the play. Rhodes scored two batters later on Christina Dark's RBI ground out.

Hullihan scored on an error in the second and Fullerton singled home Varrato in the third to account for the rest of the Jays' runs.

Varrato finished the trip 12-for-30 at the plate (.400) with four doubles, a homer, and six RBIs to go along with nine runs scored. She also hit for the cycle Friday morning against Finlandia.

The softball team will play at York (Pa.) on Friday, March 11 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
