YORK, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team was held to a pair of runs in each of its games Friday at York (Pa.). The Blue Jays fell in both, losing 5-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two. E-town outhit the Spartans in that second game, but were unable to produce more runs than YCP.

Elizabethtown (6-6) had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but York (9-3) received two two-run homers in the late stages of the opening game.

Kelsey Brown double to right center to score Emma Varrato in the top of the first. Varrato hit a two-out double to right center and scored a batter later when Brown smacked a two-bagger to the same spot. Brown was left stranded at second.

The Spartans tied it at 1-1 in the third, but E-town got that run right back in the next half inning. Varrato was the catalyst with her second double of the game as she started 2-for-2 at the plate. The freshman infielder moved up to third on a grounder and scored on Nicole Fullerton's RBI single through the left side as the Blue Jays returned back into the lead at 2-1.

Amber Sergas held York scoreless in the fourth, but they struck in the fifth and sixth with those two-run home runs. Carleigh Ruleman homered to center field in the fifth that put YCP ahead 3-2 before Savannah Zittle extended the lead to 5-2 in the sixth with her HR.

Courtney Martin came on to pitch the last inning and two-thirds to get the save. Sergas fell to 2-3. Varrato finished a perfect 3-for-3 for the Jays.

York (Pa.) flipped the script in the second game, this time scoring first. The Spartans put the Blue Jays into an early 1-0 hole. Despite having runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, E-town couldn't get the runner home. EC had eight runners left on base in the game.

After a run crossed the plate in the third for the Spartans, they got two more in the fourth to make it 4-0 in favor of the hosts.

Martin, who got the save in game one, pitched a complete game in game two. The Blue Jays had nine hits off her, but could only manage two runs, which both came in the seventh inning. Varrato, who went 3-for-3 in that first, followed that up with a 3-for-4 effort in game two. She just missed a game-tying grand slam, doubling off the wall in left to bring home Kirstin Blass and Nicole Heckert and cut York's lead in half.

With Varrato in scoring position, Martin got a ground out to end the threat and the game.

Blass and Christina Dark had a pair of hits in game two. Ashley Hullihan, who took the loss (3-1), went 1-for-3 at the plate, as did Heckert.

The softball team will open its home schedule on Tuesday, March 15 against Penn State Harrisburg for a non-conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
