Softball drops a pair of close ones to Penn State Harrisburg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team's offense was held in check Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Penn State Harrisburg. The Lions held on for a 3-2 win in game one before topping E-town a second time on the day with a 5-3 victory to cap off the sweep.

Game 1: Penn State Harrisburg 3, Elizabethtown 2

Penn State Harrisburg (5-4) had runners on second and third in the first inning and jumped on top of Elizabethtown (6-8) when Kristen Evans hit a two-out, two-run double to score Rieley Loch and Kayla Seyfert.

E-town would come back to tie the game up at 2-2 in the third. Kirstin Blass reached on an error and made it safely to second. Emma Varrato's grounder allowed Blass to move up a base. She would score on the next play as Kelsey Brown reached on an errant throw.

Kelsey Farrington drew a two-out RBI walk that tied the game up.

Amanda Hartman would shut the Jays down over the final four innings, striking out six in the process to move to 3-2. Amber Sergas was saddled with the loss. She went all seven innings for EC.

Six players for E-town had a hit each; Blass, Mara Rhodes, Varrato, Brown, Christina Dark, and Marissa Kramer.

Game 2: Penn State Harrisburg 5, Elizabethtown 3

Varrato, who is 9-for-14 at the plate in her last four games, went 2-for-3 in game two, including her RBI double in the bottom of the first. Blass scored from second after walking to lead off the game for Elizabethtown.

The Lions posted two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to get out ahead 5-1.

Varrato's second hit of the game led off the sixth for the Blue Jays. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Dark singled home her freshman teammate to collect her first RBI of the day. E-town had two runners on with two outs, but Jackie Furch got an inning-ending ground out to halt any threat from the Jays.

Blass crossed home plate for the second time in the game in the seventh as a fielding error in the outfield allowed the junior shortstop enough time to get home from second base. Now within two with a runner in scoring position, E-town had a glimmer of hope of extending game two.

Erelle Sowers came in to close out the game for Penn State Harrisburg and was able to complete the sweep for PSH with a game-ending ground out to earn her second save of the season.

Dark finished 3-for-3 at the plate in game two, while Blass, Farrington, and Maeve McGill had a hit apiece.

The softball team hosts Lebanon Valley on Thursday, March 17 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at The Nest.
