Softball comes up empty against Lebanon Valley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown registered 10 hits in game one of a non-conference softball doubleheader against Lebanon Valley Thursday afternoon, but could manufacture just one run in a 5-1 defeat. The Blue Jays outhit LVC in game two, but were on the losing end of a 1-0 game, unable to avoid the sweep.

Game 1: Lebanon Valley 5, Elizabethtown 1
The visiting Dutchmen broke through with two runs in the top of the first and opened up a 5-0 lead before freshman center fielder Mara Rhodes brought home Kirstin Blass with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Rhodes hit a shot deep in the hole at short to score Blass and disrupt a combined shutout bid by Haley Neff and Haley Christensen.

Neff limited Elizabethtown to two hits over three innings, striking out one. Christensen allowed eight hits but kept the damage to a minimum.

With runners aboard at second and third in the top of the first, LVC catcher Emily Johnson launched a double to left center that scored Sammy Bost and Cheyanne Brown for a 2-0 Dutchmen lead. The visitors added to their edge with an RBI single by Kelli Valle. Johnson's second RBI double and a sac fly off the bat of Christensen in the fifth made it 5-0.

E-town threatened in the fourth with Emma Varrato providing a leadoff single and Kelsey Brown reaching on an error. Two straight fielder's choices and a strikeout allowed the Dutchmen to escape further harm.

Singles by Marissa Kramer, Rhodes and Varrato loaded the bases for the Jays in the bottom of the seventh, but Christensen induced a Brown pop up to short to secure the win for LVC.

Bost was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Johnson drove in three for the Dutchmen. Blass, Rhodes, Varrato, Christina Dark and Kramer each had two hits for Elizabethtown. Sergas struck out three over seven innings for the Blue and Gray, yiedling five earned runs on eight hits.

Game 2: Lebanon Valley 1, Elizabethtown 0
Lebanon Valley was on top early in the second game, producing a run off Valle's single up the middle that gave LVC a 1-0 lead. It would turn out to be the only run of the game as the Dutchmen combo of Alexa Windsor and Holly Langdon held the Jays scoreless. However, that didn't mean E-town didn't have its chances.

The Blue Jays left a total of 13 runners on base over the seven-inning game and none of them were important than the three left stranded in the bottom of the seventh.

Varrato and Brown hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second, with Varrato in scoring position. Langdon got a fly out to put two outs on the board, but Nicole Heckert singled to load the bases. Varrato stood at third, Emily Nelson, (pinch ran for Brown), the potential game-winning run at second, and Heckert at first.

On a 2-2 pitch, Langdon fielded a grounder that came right back at her and tossed over to first to record the final out and shut the door on the Blue Jays' rally.

E-town had at least one runner in scoring position in every inning, but the Dutchmen pitchers were able to get out of those scares unblemished. Jordyn Miller went 3-for-4 to lead LVC in game two. Varrato finished 3-for-3, while Brown and Nicole Fullerton both had two hits each.

The softball team will host Dickinson on Tuesday, March 22 for another non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
