Sergas helps softball earn split with Dickinson

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Amber Sergas pitched another complete game for the Elizabethtown College softball team in a game one win, but a late lead for the Blue Jays slipped away in game two as Dickinson rallied to split with E-town.

GAME 1: Elizabethtown 2, Dickinson 1
The damage was done for Elizabethtown (7-11) in the top of the first inning of the opener. Mara Rhodes drew a one-out walk and moved up to third on Emma Varrato's single to right center. Christina Dark walked to load the bases. With two outs in the inning, Marissa Kramer dropped in a two-RBI single to put E-town up 2-0 after one inning of play.

Sergas held Dickinson (2-12) to a single hit through five innings, but ran into a little bit of trouble in the sixth. The Red Devils had three singles and a hit-by-pitch, with Grace Edelson driving in a run to make it 2-1.

The bases were loaded with no outs, and then the Blue Jays turned a rare triple play to avoid any further damage. The ball was popped up off the bat of Killian Kueny with a fielder charging to make the catch. The ball went in and out of the glove, and alertly, Kirstin Blass picked it up and threw home to gun down the runner at third. Ashley Hullihan tossed it back to Kelsey Farrington at third for the force out, and she relayed over to second where Emma Varrato got the third out of the play to end the threat.

Sergas got a ground out and two strikeouts in the seventh to earn her third win of the season. She allowed just the one run on four hits with six K's.

GAME 2: Dickinson 7, Elizabethtown 5
Nicole Piet knocked in a run in the top of the first in game two as the Red Devils were out to an early 1-0 lead.

Scoreless through two innings, the Jays got going in the third. Varrato doubled down the left field line with two outs to score Blass from second. Dark, the next batter, swung at the first pitch and connected with an RBI single up the middle.

Nicole Fullerton followed suit with a hit to left center and ended up at second base with Dark moving up to third. Kramer made it four straight hits off Kueny with a two-out, two-RBI double to left. E-town led 4-1 at that point. Nicole Heckert also singled in the inning.

Dickinson got a run back in the fifth before exploding in the sixth. They tagged the Jays for five runs, capped off by a two-run homer from Grace Edelson to return to the lead at 7-4.

Dark uncorked a deep fly ball to right field that allowed to Rhodes to score from third, but Madison Milaszewski ended the game with a ground out to earn her first win of the season in relief duty.

Varrato went 4-for-7 between the two games while Kramer had a team-high four RBIs on the day.

The Blue Jays will host Catholic on Saturday, March 26 at The Nest to open Landmark Conference play. The doubleheader is set for 1 and 3 p.m.
