Jays salvage split with Blass' walkoff hit

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College softball team needed two runs in the bottom of the seventh in game two to salvage a split with visiting Catholic on Saturday at The Nest. The Blue Jays scored twice in the inning, capped off by Kirstin Blass' walkoff hit to grab a 3-2 win in game two. Catholic won game one, 2-1.

GAME 1: Catholic 2, Elizabethtown 1
The opener of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel between Catholic's (13-5, 2-2 Landmark) Kelly Lynch and Elizabethtown's (8-12, 1-1 Landmark) Amber Sergas. The pair, both freshman, rank among the top pitchers in the Landmark Conference this season and the battle lived up to its billing.

Lynch avoided an early threat from E-town when Blass doubled to lead off the bottom half of the first. Blass would make it to third on a ground out, but Lynch got out of the inning with a strike out, one of five in the game.

Sergas worked through the Catholic lineup over the first two innings, but found herself in trouble in the third. A walk and two straight singles had the bases loaded for the Cardinals with an out in the inning. Sergas got Hailey Horton to foul out to Christina Dark and induced a grounder that Emma Varrato scooped up and tossed over to Dark at first to get out of the third unscathed.

The teams traded 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth. Each team had runners on in the fifth, but neither squad could manufacture a run as the game went scoreless into the sixth.

Erin Adams put Catholic ahead 1-0 with an RBI ground out with one out in the sixth. Sergas struck out Christy Sanchez and Alyssa Keane to work out a runner at third and keep the damage to a minimum.

Down a run entering the final half inning of the game, E-town hung tough and it eventually paid off. Marissa Kramer led off with a single and moved up to second on the next play as Emily Nelson laid down the sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Nicole Fullerton came on to pinch hit and delivered for the Blue Jays, dropping a single into center field. Kramer scored on the play to force extra innings.

Horton hit a one-out double in the eighth and two straight singles got her home to help the Cardinals retake the lead at 2-1. Lynch gave up a double to Varrato in the bottom half of the eighth, but she was left stranded at third as Lynch closed it out to give Catholic the 2-1 win.

GAME 2: Elizabethtown 3, Catholic 2
It was another low scoring affair in the second game, with only two runs through four innings and three combined through six.

The Cardinals took advantage of an E-town fielding error in the third inning to grab a 1-0 lead and eventually got a second to take a 2-0 lead going into the fifth.

Kelsey Brown broke up Catholic's no-hit bid in the fifth with a leadoff single through the left side. Dark walked and Brown moved up to second. Nicole Heckert came in to run for Brown, and, while stand at third base, scored easily on Ashley Hullihan's single up the middle to cut the deficit in half.

Elizabethtown trailed by the same score going into its half of the seventh and was able to work its late-game magic once again.

Kramer reached on an error and advanced to second base on a ground out. Down to the final out, Maeve McGill sent a base hit to center field to score Kramer from second and tie the game at 2-2.

Blass, 0-for-3 at that point, stepped into the box and launched a 2-1 pitch to left field. McGill sped around second as the ball landed halfway up the left field fence and darted home to score the game winning run with no play at the plate. Blass ended up at second with the walkoff double.

Blass, Varrato, Brown, Hullihan, and McGill registered hits for the Jays in game two. Varrato and Kramer had a pair of hits each in the opener. Hullihan improved to 4-4 on the season with the win.

E-town will travel to face DeSales on Wednesday, March 30 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
