Softball scores season-high 17 runs in game two, split with DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College softball team split its third straight doubleheader, this time on the road at non-conference opponent DeSales on Wednesday. The Blue Jay bats were slow to wake, only producing two runs in a 7-2 game-one loss, but came alive in game two to the tune of a season-high 17 runs as E-town ended the game in five innings, 17-7. Christina Dark and Mara Rhodes both hit the first home runs of their careers.

GAME 1: DeSales 7, Elizabethtown 2
Kirstin Blass led off the top of game one with her first homer of the season and second of her career to put Elizabethtown (9-13) up 1-0 right away. E-town led by the same score going into the bottom of the third, but DeSales (3-14) would score in each of the next four innings to take command of the opening game. Three runs for the Bulldogs in the sixth had them up 7-2 going into the seventh.

The Jays scattered six hits over the seven innings, which included Rhodes' first career homer in the fifth inning, a solo shot.

Marissa Kramer doubled with two outs in the sixth to give the Jays a runner in scoring position, but she was left stranded. Blass sent a two-out double down the right field line in the seventh to try and get the rally started, but like Kramer, she was left on as DeSales closed out the Blue Jays in game one.

GAME 2: Elizabethtown 17, DeSales 7 (F/5)
Where Elizabethtown struggled in manufacturing runs in game one, it did not in game two. E-town plated a season-best 17 runs in just five innings to force an early ending to game two.

Eight of the Jays' nine starters recorded at least a hit, led by a 4-for-5 effort from Emma Varrato, who finished the day 6-for-8 overall. Kramer was a perfect 3-for-3, while Rhodes also had three hits. Christina Dark had a team-high four RBIs in the blowout win, while Varrato and Ashley Hullihan had three runs batted in apiece.

Kramer singled home Blass in the first as the Blue Jays took another early 1-0 lead. DeSales was quick to respond, plating a run on a homer in the first and adding three more in the second to hop in front 4-1.

That lead would be short-lived for the Bulldogs as the bats broke loose for the Blue and Gray in the third. Varrato smacked a leadoff triple to right and scored two batters later on Kramer's RBI base hit, her second RBI of the game. Hullihan singled to center with the bases loaded and knocked home a run. Maeve McGill brought home Kramer to tie the game 4-4 and Blass' fielder's choice RBI gave E-town the lead back at 5-4.

After DeSales tied it at 5-5 in the bottom half of the third, the Jays put the game away for good over the next two innings. Nicole Heckert and Varrato hit back-to-back singles to start off the fourth. Dark, with Varrato at first and Heckert up to third, hit a three-run bomb to send EC ahead 8-5. Hullihan hit a sac fly later on in the inning to make it 9-5.

Blass and Heckert were on for Varrato in the fifth, and the freshman delivered with her second triple of the afternoon to score both baserunners. Dark added an RBI groundout to plate Varrato as the score escalated to 12-5. Hullihan, Blass, Heckert, and Varrato picked up RBIs in the fifth as the lead blossomed to 17-5 by the end.

The Bulldogs got a pair of runs back in the fifth, but the damage was done and the game ended after five innings.

Hullihan pitched 4.1 innings to get her fifth win of the year. Nicole Fullerton recorded the final two outs on the mound for E-town.

The softball team will host Moravian on Saturday, April 2 for a Landmark Conference doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
