Game Recap: Softball |

Youth paves way to two wins for softball

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Elizabethtown College softball team entered the season with just one senior and two other upperclassmen, but the new Blue Jays have acclimated themselves well and Friday was a showcase of the potential for the team. Emma Varrato went 4-for-4 in a 12-0, five-inning win over Finlandia and Amber Sergas pitched a complete game for her second win of the season to give E-town a 5-3 victory over Northwestern (Minn.). The Jays have now won three straight games.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 12, Finlandia 0 (F/5)

Varrato didn't just go 4-for-4, she completed one of the rarer feats in the game as the freshman hit for the cycle. Varrato singled in the first, doubled in third, homered in the fourth, and finished it off with a triple in the fifth.

Eight runs in the first three innings helped Elizabethtown (5-3) blow open an 8-0 lead. Varrato singled in Nicole Heckert for the first run of the game. Heckert drew a one-out walk. Christina Dark singled to right field and drove in Kelsey Brown to make it 2-0 in the first. Dark pitched all five innings, giving up just two hits and allowing no runs for the win.

Mara Rhodes reached on an error in the third and was able to advance to second on the play. Two batters later, Rhodes was rounding third base and scoring on Varrato's RBI double. Megan Elmer, on her first collegiate hit, drove in her first career RBI in the Jays' six-run third. Kelsey Farrington brought home Varrato a batter before.

The freshman class contributed eight of E-town's 11 hits in the game. Kirstin Blass was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Varrato knocked her first career home run to left field in the fourth inning as the rout was on, 9-0 at that point. She hit an RBI triple in the fifth and scored on a passed ball.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 5, Northwestern (Minn.) 3

Sergas controlled Northwestern (0-4) in game two of the day, though the Eagles did rally in the seventh to close the gap to two runs.

Sergas, who improved to 2-1, at one point late in the game had retired ten straight batters after allowing a lead-off single in the fourth. The Eagles managed a two-out walk off the freshman, and followed that up with a single and a double, and suddenly the game was at 5-3. Sergas got a popup to Blass to end the game with runners on second and third.

Northwestern led 1-0 after the top half of the first inning, but E-town quickly tied up the score.

Marissa Kramer reached on an error in the second that allowed Sergas to score on the play and gave EC the lead, one it would not relinquish.

Dark, Sergas, and Heather Heckert added RBIs to make it 5-1 Blue Jays going into the seventh. Brown was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game with a walk.

Sergas struck out seven batters in her seven innings of work.

Elizabethtown will finish up its trip with two more games Saturday, March 5. They will play St. John Fisher at 9 a.m., followed by Ursinus at 11 a.m.
