Baseball blasts Eastern, holds off Northwestern (Minn.)

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Elizabethtown propelled a seven-run fourth inning into a 12-2 win over Eastern and staved off Northwestern's late rally for a 7-6 victory Friday in Fort Pierce, Fla.

vs. Eastern
Kevin Elwell twirled seven scoreless innings to keep the Eagles at bay. The Blue Jays (5-2) jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first. Derek Manning drove home Richy Masciarelli and then scored later in the inning on a pair of Eastern errors.

The flood gates opened in the fourth as Elizabethtown batted around and extended its lead to 9-0. Kyle Fackler and Masciarelli drew consecutive bases loaded walks to bring home a pair of runs. Another Eastern error extended the inning and the Blue and Gray took advantage by scoring five more runs. The big blow came off the bat of Aaron Rahn, a two-run single that capped the seven-run frame.

Control issues plagued Eastern again in the fifth as it yielded three more runs to the Jays.

Elwell was on point, allowing a mere three hits, no free passes and striking out four. Braden Stinar went one inning, Zachary Karasek got two outs in the ninth and Joseph Williams struck out Timmy Gorton swinging to end it.

Masciarelli went 2-for-3 with two runs and a run batted in. Rahn was 2-for-3 and Fackler finished with two RBIs.

Elizabethtown's 12 runs came on just six hits.

vs. Northwestern
The Blue Jays fell behind 4-1, but Dylan Manning's bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth inning gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

It got hairy at the end for Elizabethtown. Bradley Spencer's RBI single pulled the Eagles (1-2) within 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth, but Zack Tomasko recorded the final four outs, fanning two, for the save.

Dylan Manning was 2-of-3 with 3 RBIs to lead the offense. Catcher Nick Bein doubled in Brennan Snyder in the fourth and scored a pair of runs.

Jay Singer relieved starter Anthony Lippy to start the fourth and stabilized E-town. Singer gave up four hits and an unearned run in 4.2 innings to earn the win.

Elizabethtown finishes off its Spring Break trip to Fort Pierce Saturday with a doubleheader against La Roche. Game one gets going at 9:30 a.m.
