Clough leads Blue Jays over Misericordia in overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Jason Clough scored his fourth goal of the game with under two minutes remaining in overtime to give Elizabethtown an 11-10 victory over a scrappy Misericordia team Wednesday at Wolf Field.

Matt Stewart won the face-off to start OT, but the Blue Jays could not find the mark on their first two shots and a third was stopped by Cougar goalie Josh Shanker. The empty possession loomed large when John Tierney forced a turnover and Misericordia cleared before taking timeout to try and set up a play to win it.

The visitors' plan was foiled, however. Misericordia never went to the cage and Nick Specht ended up forcing a Phillip Fraher turnover. Brother, Mike Specht, picked up the ball and sent the Jays (6-3) off in transition. He found Clough, who ripped a shot by Shanker with 1:56 left in the first OT to extend Elizabethtown's winning streak to three games.

Clough's career-high six points (4 goals, 2 assists) came at the most opportune time. A three-goal run by Misericordia (5-2) late in the first quarter and into the second had the Cougars in front 5-2. Clough assisted on the first of two straight goals from senior captain Jimmy Waters and then scored one himself to tie the game at five 2:51 before the half.

The Cougars went up by two midway through the third on man-up markers by Pat Kellish (13:21) and Brandon Winslow (8:46), and held a 9-7 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Unassisted tallies by Nick Specht and Mike Specht knotted things at nine with 11:35 to go. Clough's hat trick goal with 4:31 left in regulation gave E-town a 10-9 lead, its first of the game.

Winslow, who scored 27 goals as a freshman, but was appearing in just his third game this season, tied it for the Cougars with his second of the afternoon at the 3:28 mark.

Clough's previous career-high for points in a game was four, set twice during his freshman season. He now has 15 points in nine games this season and is six points shy of matching his career-high 23, also set in 2014.

Mike Specht scored twice and picked up an assist. Kevin Meakim and Waters had a pair of goals and Matt Rucci won 8-of-13 face-offs for the Jays. Nick Specht was all over the field in recording a goal, an assist, five caused turnovers and six ground balls.

Jeremy Klipple caused three turnovers and Michael Hofstedt two for the E-town defense. Both players also scooped up five ground balls.

Goalie Davis Miracle moved over the 100-save plateau for the season with 13 against the Cougars. Miracle has registered double-digit saves in four consecutive games. Shanker finished with nine saves for Misericordia.

Elizabethtown plays its second of three in a row at Wolf Field Saturday at 3 p.m., against Merchant Marine.
