Men's lacrosse jumps on Catholic early, secures big road win

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Four Elizabethtown players supplied hat tricks in the same game for the first time since 2011 and the Blue Jay defense kept Catholic's top offensive weapon quiet for most of the night in a huge 16-12 Landmark Conference road victory Thursday.

Leading scorer Joe Clark already had his fourth hat trick of the season before halftime against the only team to receive more first-place votes than E-town in this year's Landmark Conference Coaches Poll.

Jason Clough and Mike Specht contributed a goal and assist each in the first two quarters, and Jeremy Klipple opened the second with his first career goal a mere eight seconds in. The Blue Jays (7-3, 2-0 Landmark) forced four of Catholic's seven turnovers in the first quarter. Sophomore Michael Hofstedt accounted for two of those.

Elizabethtown scored four of the last five goals in the first half to grab an 8-4 halftime lead. The visitors took a three-goal lead to the fourth and put it away on a 4-0 run with goals by Clough (two), Mike Specht and Dan Bednarik that bumped the Blue Jays' advantage to 15-7.

The Blue Jays' defense kept CUA leading scorer Tim Keith in check all night. Keith finished with two goals and two assists, but three of his four points came in the final 2:16 when the result was no longer in doubt.

Goalie Davis Miracle held up his end of the bargain, too, stopping 12 shots. Thursday's game was the third straight in which Miracle has made double-digit saves and fifth this season.

E-town improved to 9-0 all-time in Landmark Conference games after joining the league prior to the 2015 season. Catholic held a 51-43 edge in shots and won 19 face-offs to the Jays' 13, but Drew Delaney's battle-tested team limited itself to 12 giveaways, was 16-of-17 on clearing attempts and tied a season-high with its 16 goals.

Clark's goal off the pass of Phil Kyger with 3:04 to go in the third marked the junior attackman's third four-goal game of the season. Clough (3 goals, 1 assist), Mike Specht (3g, 1a) and Cody Larkin (3g) also put up hat tricks for the Blue Jays. They are the first quartet to accomplish the feat since Shawn Corcoran (4), Greg Kenneally, Chris Kidger and Brian Hicks did it against Neumann March 16, 2011.

Matt Rucci won nine face-offs for Elizabethtown, which sent four players to the dot to go against the Cardinals' Matt Michalski. Michalski won 19-of-32.

Jimmy Waters had a third quarter goal for E-town, his seventh of the year, while Nick Specht registered two assists.

Keith led Catholic (7-3, 1-1) with a four-point night. Liam Clancy, Jack Murphy and Ethan Rodriguez scored twice, but second-leading scorer Victor Licata was held without a goal on 12 shots. Licata assisted on a pair of Cardinal goals.

CUA goalie Harrison Holak made 11 saves.

Elizabethtown will return home next Wednesday to face Misericordia after going 2-1 on its three-game road string. Game time against the Cougars is set for 4 p.m.
