Game Recap: Softball |

Hullihan makes two runs hold up, Blue Jays split for third time in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. — On the third day of competition for the Elizabethtown College softball team down in Florida, the Blue Jays split a pair of games. E-town fell 5-2 at the bats of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) and Ashley Hullihan made two runs hold up in a 2-1 win over Rose-Hulman.

Game 1: Johnson & Wales 5, Elizabethtown 2

Johnson & Wales (2-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double by Emilyi Gorecki, scoring Brenna DuPerry.

It didn't take long for Elizabethtown (3-3) to answer as they scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the first. Kelsey Brown reached on an error and Kirstin Blass scored on the play to tie the game, 1-1.

Gorecki hit a sacrifice fly into the glove of Marissa Kramer in the third that allowed DuPerry to score her second run of the game in the third inning. Johnson & Wales led from thereon out, tacking two runs on in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Blass got an RBI groundout in the seventh, but that's all the Jays could muster before being closed out by the Wildcats.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 2, Rose-Hulman 1

Hullihan only got two runs of support, but it was enough for the junior, who pitched seven strong innings to carry the Blue Jays to the win.

Brown accounted for both of the E-town RBIs, with a double in the first inning to give EC a 1-0 lead. She helped the lead double to 2-0 in the third with a base knock that scored Mara Rhodes. Rhodes also scored on Brown's double in the first inning. Both players were 2-for-3 at the plate.

Emma Varrato and Kelsey Farrington also had hits for the Jays.

The only blemish on Hullihan's line was a third-inning homerun by Jenny Miller to halve the deficit for Rose-Hulman (3-3). They would only get one more hit off Hullihan the rest of way. She improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Jays have Thursday off before the final two days of play. E-town faces Finlandia (9 a.m.) and Northwestern (Minn.) (1 p.m.) on Friday, March 4.
