Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Specht, Blue Jays own second half in win over Susquehanna

SELISNGROVE, Pa. – Mike Specht scored a second-half hat trick and the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team outscored Susquehanna 8-4 after halftime to open Landmark Conference play with a 10-7 victory over the Crusaders Saturday.

Early season tests against regional powers Dickinson, Ursinus and York had the Blue Jays prepared for the Crusaders' test. E-town passed with flying colors, turning up the wick on offense in the final 30 minutes after two tightly-contested quarters that produced just five goals between the teams.

It was all Elizabethtown after Andrew Porzio's goal at 10:44 of the third put Susquehanna up a pair, 4-2. The Jays (5-3, 1-0 Landmark) got goals from Mike Specht (8:42) and Nick Specht (3:07) to round out the scoring in the third, and opened the fourth with three straight to cap a 5-0 run.

Dan Bednarik's fifth goal of the season 1:32 into the fourth put the Blue Jays in front for the first time, 5-4. Cody Larkin followed with his ninth at 10:28 and Phil Kyger netted the first of his two fourth-quarter goals at 6:01 to make it 7-4.

Specht capped his first hat trick of the year with two goals in the final 3:07 that kept the Crusaders (6-2, 0-1 Landmark) from getting any closer than three in the final five minutes.

Elizabethtown goalie Davis Miracle came up large in the first half when scoring was at a premium. Coming off a school record 23 saves in Wednesday's 10-6 loss at No. 6 York, Miracle made eight saves in the first half, including five in the second quarter to keep the Jays within 3-2 at halftime. Miracle finished with 11 saves.

The Blue Jays were a perfect 17-of-17 on clears, the first time they've gone without a failed clear in 18 games, dating back to last year's 7-5 win over Susquehanna on March 14.

Mike Specht, who assisted on Joe Clark's first-quarter goal, was at the center of the action defensively, too, causing a game-high three turnovers and tying for the team lead with three ground balls.

Clark and Kyger each had two-goal, one assist afternoons for the Blue and Gray. Larkin had a goal and an assist and Jimmy Waters also set up a goal.

The hosts were led by Porzio's two goals. Chet McLaughlin and Greg Rabiecki had a goal and an assist apiece for SU, which outshot E-town 38-30. Goalie Dylan Abplanalp made 12 saves.

E-town finishes up a three-game stretch away from Wolf Field Thursday evening in the nation's capital. The Blue Jays will face Catholic in a pivotal conference game that starts at 7 p.m.
