Blue Jays defeat King's for first win of the season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College men's tennis entered the win column in impressive fashion, sweeping doubles and winning 4-of-7 singles matches in a 7-2 victory over King's (Pa.) Friday afternoon at the Alumni Courts.

The Blue Jays returned to action after a 14-day layoff that last saw them compete March 4, in Hilton Head Island, S.C., against Tiffin. Friday's match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was twice postponed.

Sunny skies greeted the players, but a stiff wind was a factor throughout.

Elizabethtown (1-3) rode the momentum of an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles from Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris to an eventual whitewash of the Monarchs in tandem play.

Evan Hinkley and Nick Strobel earned their third win of the season together by the same 8-5 score against John Labiak and Matt James at No. 3 doubles.

Nathan Dowling and Matthew Hornbaker finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Ryan Hegarty and Terry Briggs at No. 3.

Dowling's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Hegarty and Hinkley's 6-1, 6-2, straight set victory over Labiak at No. 5 quickly wrapped up the win for the Blue Jays.

Hornbaker blanked James in the first set and won No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Strobel dropped the first set tiebreaker, but responded with a commanding 6-2 win in the second and complete the comeback with a 10-4 win in the super tiebreaker against Briggs at sixth singles.

King's (1-5) got points from George Parkhurst at No. 1 singles and Nathan Carl at No. 2 singles.

Elizabethtown's match at Misericordia Saturday has been postponed until Sunday, April 17. The Blue Jays next match will be Thursday, March 31, at Lebanon Valley.
