Miracle sets single-game saves record; No. 6 York foils Jays' upset bid

YORK, Pa. – Davis Miracle made an Elizabethtown College single-game record 23 saves, but unbeaten and sixth-ranked York (Pa.) scored four times in the final 5:07 to pull out a 10-6 victory over the upset-minded Blue Jays at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans bombarded Elizabethtown's junior goalie with 50 shots on the afternoon, but Miracle did everything he could to keep the Blue Jays in the game stopping 21 shots through three quarters. Because of his epic performance, the Jays had a two-goal lead with 10:35 to play in the third quarter and entered the fourth tied, 5-5.

A low-scoring first half gave way to a wide-open second that saw the teams combined for 10 goals.

Elizabethtown (4-3) scored two man-down goals in a game for just the third time in the program's 15-year history.

Phil Kyger's ninth goal of the season, with teammate Jeremy Klipple off for slashing, at 10:35 of the third pushed the visitors' lead to 5-3 and marked the first time either team had a lead of more than one goal.

York (6-0) answered E-town's run of three straight goals from Nick Specht, Dan Bednarik and Kyger in the third quarter with one of its own that rolled over into the fourth.

The Spartans grabbed a 6-5 lead at the 10:36 mark on Hunter Davis' man-up goal from Cameron Leech before Cody Larkin finished a pass from Joe Clark to bring the Jays even with 5:45 remaining.

Already off to a program-best start and coming off back-to-back triumphs over top 10 nationally-ranked opponents, the Spartans found a way to preserve their winning streak.

Matt Whitcher completed a hat trick with the eventual game-winning goal 38 seconds after Larkin tied it. Dillon Hannah added goals at 4:00 and 2:21, and Austin Glab scored at 1:01 to provide insurance for the hosts down the stretch.

Larkin was the only E-town player with a multi-goal game, scoring twice. Clark had a goal and two assists.

Jeremy Klipple assisted on Clark's man-down goal late in the first quarter. The Virginian also forced two turnovers, picked up three ground balls and went 1-of-3 at the X.

York had its way on face-offs, however. Jake Katchmark won 14-of-18 and the Blue Jays won just 5-of-19, the fourth straight game they've won less than 50% going back to the victory over DeSales on Feb. 27. The Spartans outshot E-town 50-16 and were plus-9 in turnover differential.

Six players fired five shots or more for the Spartans. Hannah and Leech each took seven. Whitcher's hatty, along with two goals apiece from Davis and Hannah accounted for 70% of York's offensive output. Leech totaled a goal and two assists, while Glab and Joseph Joseph had a goal and an assist each.

Katchmark picked up a game-high nine ground balls and Caleb Abney, the two-time reigning Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, turned away seven shots to pick up the win in the cage for YCP.

Miracle topped Chris Schuch's 22-save effort against Franklin & Marshall from March 11, 2006, and became just the fourth netminder in Blue Jay history to eclipse the 20-save mark in a game. The Chambersburg native recorded the record-breaking save on a Nick Magnusson shot with 9:21 to play.

Elizabethtown must now regroup and get ready for the start of Landmark Conference play Saturday. The Blue Jays will travel to Selinsgrove for a 1 p.m. face-off against Susquehanna.
