Fackler and Shirk homer in loss at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Kyle Fackler and Ryan Shirk hit their first home runs of the season, but the Elizabethtown College baseball team could not protect a late two-run lead in a 10-9 loss at Lebanon Valley Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Anthony Cameron, a defensive replacement at third in the bottom of the seventh, laced a one-out single to right center in the top of the eighth for his first career hit. Fackler followed with a bomb –his first career homer– off Eric Marrero that sailed into the Jays' bullpen in right to give the Blue Jays a 9-7 lead after scrapping from behind most of the afternoon.

Elizabethtown (6-7) saw its advantage slip away, literally in the home half of the inning. Mike Puglisi's one-out single to left seemed routine, but left fielder Dylan Manning suffered a stroke of bad luck when he lost his footing on the slick grass attempting to field the hit. The ball rolled all the way to the wall and allowed Marc Seibert to score from first.

Puglisi would score the tying run on a wild pitch from Zack Tomasko and Josh Marcelli's two-out single brought in Marshall Kiessling with the eventual game-winning run.

Lebanon Valley built a 3-0 lead after one on four hits against Blue Jay freshman Mike Garvey. Garvey made it through the second without damage before turning the ball over to Nick Gulla.

The Blue Jays got one back in the fourth when Aaron Rahn singled in Colby Smith and probably should have had a second. Dylan Manning appeared to beat out LVC's 4-6-3 double play bid, but was instead called out to end the inning, negating brother Derek Manning's run that would have cut the Dutchmen's lead to 3-2.

Shirk turned on a 2-0 pitch from LVC freshman Jacob Williams and put it over the left field fence to inch the Jays closer in the top of the fifth. The momentum started to build for E-town as Fackler singled and Richy Masciarelli walked. Smith then hit an RBI single to score Fackler with the tying run, but LVC threw the ball into the dugout on the play and Masciarelli also trotted home to put the visitors in front for the first time.

The Dutchmen (5-6) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-spot. Elizabethtown would tie the game at six in the top of the sixth and knot things at seven with a single run in the top of the seventh before taking the lead on Fackler's home run in the eighth.

Wednesday's game, played early in overcast conditions and late in bright sunlight, featured 28 hits and 10 errors between the two teams. The Blue Jays' 13 hits were their most since March 1, and just the second time they've had more than 10 or more in a game during that time.

Fackler, Masciarelli and Smith hit 1-2-3 in the order and finished with six runs scored. Fackler, the junior second baseman from Harrisburg, was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. He's now one hit shy of 100 for his career. Smith, Derek Manning, Dylan Manning and Shirk all had two hits.

Garvey and Gulla both gave up three earned runs on six hits in their appearances. Garvey went two innings, while Gulla pitched 3.2. Jay Singer went 1.2 and Tomasko struck out two, but took the loss.

Kiessling finished 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles for LVC. Marcelli and Puglisi each had three hits, while Nathan Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save. Marrero got the win despite allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings.

Elizabethtown opens Landmark play with a weekend series at Scranton. The teams will play two Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
