Ursinus powers past men's lacrosse

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Ursinus used its face-off dominance to subdue the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team, 12-7, in a non-conference tilt at Wolf Field Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (4-1) were stellar at the X, winning 18-of-20 on the day. James Fairchild manufactured 14 wins on 15 tries and corralled a game-high eight ground balls. Steve Palo went 4-of-5.

With the field slanted in its favor, Ursinus outscored the Blue Jays (4-2) 8-2 in the first half and built a 10-3 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Logan Panaccione struck for three goals and three assists, Gerard Brown added a goal and three helpers, and nine players found the scoresheet for the Bears in their first meeting with Elizabethtown all-time.

E-town was hit with seven flags in a game that featured 12 of them. Ursinus took advantage of two extra-man opportunities, with Panaccione scoring 28 seconds before the half and Peter DeSimone beating Davis Miracle with 9:13 remaining in the third.

Joe Clark scored four goals for the Blue Jays, the last of which was the 75th of his career. Clark's goal off a Nick Specht feed with 2:02 to go in the first quarter got Elizabethtown on the board. Mike Specht scored unassisted during a flag down situation 1:18 into the second quarter to pull the Blue Jays back within one, 3-2, but Ursinus rattled off the final five goals of the stanza to take an 8-2 lead at the break.

Mike Specht had two goals on the afternoon for the Blue and Gray, while Jimmy Waters netted his sixth of the season. Junior midfielder Jason Clough had three assists.

Elizabethtown ended up outshooting Ursinus 31-29 and committed an astounding 10 fewer turnovers. The Jays were also 17-of-19 on clears. None of that could diminish the role Fairchild played in earning the Bears possession with his face-off prowess and the visitors took full advantage of the opportunities afforded to them.

Freshman Jeremy Klipple led the Blue Jay defense with four caused turnovers. Mike Tangredi and Luke Stephens each had three. Tangredi's six ground balls were a team-high and Stephens followed with five.

Miracle came up with eight saves for E-town in the cage. His counterpart, Brian Neff, stopped 10 shots at the other end for a Ursinus team that began the season ranked 14th in the USILA/Nike Division III Coaches Poll and is currently receiving votes. The Bears advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2015.

Elizabethtown will play its next three contests away from home, starting with Wednesday's match-up at No. 11 York (Pa.).
