St. John Fisher slips past men's tennis

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – St. John Fisher won five of the first six matches to post a 5-4 win over Elizabethtown Monday afternoon.

The Blue Jays won No. 2 doubles, along with Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles to keep it close, but the Cardinals (1-1) were on their games early.

Kevin Kulawiec and Quinn Magiera picked up an 8-2 win over Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris at No. 1 singles. John Miller and Adam Moran broke a 1-1 tie with a 9-8 (5) victory against Evan Hinkley and Nick Strobel at No. 3.

Elizabethtown's only doubles point came from Nathan Dowling and Matthew Hornbaker, who held off the Cardinals' Jonathan Harper and Jacob Zarzycki, 9-7.

Kulawiec (No. 1 singles),Christian Barnes (No. 4) and Magiera (No. 2) pushed Fisher's lead to 5-1 and ensured victory for the Cardinals.

At No. 5 singles, Evan Hinkley won successive sets in 6-3 fashion over Jarrett Pelton. Dowling survived in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 over Jacob Zarzycki at No. 3 and Nick Strobel snuck past Adam Moran 3-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Elizabethtown will return to the court Wed. at noon against Mount Union.
