Sergas gets first win, Jays go 1-1

CLERMONT, Fla. — For the second consecutive day, the Elizabethtown College softball team split a pair of games during its spring break trip. The Blue Jays pounded Hanover 8-0 in five innings and fell 2-1 to close out the day against Mount Union.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 8, Hanover 0 (F/5)

Amber Sergas was all Elizabethtown (2-2) would need on the mound and at the plate. The freshman pitched all five innings, surrendering only two hits for the shutout. She struck out five.

After a scoreless first, Sergas got the Blue Jays on the board by driving in two runs. Heather Heckert and Emma Varrato were both on base and scored on Sergas' single to right field. Sergas scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 E-town after the second inning.

Christina Dark singled through the left side to move Nicole Fullerton up to second after Fullerton reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the third. Nicole Heckert, pinch running for Fullerton, scored on Varrato's RBI single to center. Sergas moved Varrato and Dark into scoring position with a ground out and Kirstin Blass doubled them both home to up the Jays' lead to 6-0.

Another defensive error by Hanover (1-2) in the bottom of the fifth led to two more Elizabethtown runs, which ended the game after five, 8-0. Blass went 2-for-3 for E-town.

Game 2: Mount Union 2, Elizabethtown 1

Elizabethtown managed just four hits against Mount Union (2-2) in game two and produced just one run against Allie Scali, who struck out six.

Scali drove in the game's first run with a sac fly to put MU up 1-0 after two.

Ashley Hullihan got on base to start off the third for E-town and stole second to get into scoring position. After a pop out, Hullihan was able to steal her second base of the inning, taking third safely. Marissa Kramer got Hullihan home with an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1.

The game remained in a deadlock until the seventh, when Mount Union got a walk-off RBI single to claim a 2-1 win.

E-town will have a day off on Tuesday, before playing another pair of games on Wednesday, March 2.
