Softball splits with Saint Vincent, Franklin to start season

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Elizabethtown College softball team left The Nest to travel south to warmer climates for its spring break trip. The 2016 season began Sunday at the Legends Way Fields where the Blue Jays split a pair of games with Saint Vincent (1-0) and Franklin (2-2). E-town lost 2-1 to SVC only to come back and get a 9-6 win over Franklin in eight innings.

Game 1: Saint Vincent 2, Elizabethtown 1

Kirstin Blass led off the Jays' bottom half of the first inning with a single. Two batters later, she scored all the way from first on a Mara Rhodes RBI double, her first collegiate hit and RBI. Rhodes advanced to third with two outs on Nicole Fullerton's single, but was left stranded as E-town went into the second up 1-0.

Amber Sergas made her first career start for Elizabethtown (1-1) and pitched a complete game for the Blue Jays. Sergas had ten strikeouts in the contest, including striking out the side in the third and seventh innings. Sergas had at least one K in six of the seven innings she pitched.

An E-town error in the fifth inning allowed a run to score to tie the game 1-1. Then, with two on, two out for Saint Vincent, Sergas got a ground out fielder's choice to end the inning and the scoring threat.

A leadoff triple for Saint Vincent in the sixth provided a great opportunity to take the lead over the Jays and they would do so on another defensive error from EC.

Samantha Emert gave up the one earned run in the first to Elizabethtown, but after that, she shut down the Jays, only allowing one hit the rest of the game to get the win. Emert had nine strikeouts for Saint Vincent.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 9, Franklin 6 (F/8)

For the second straight game, the Blue Jays were out to a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Christina Dark got a run home with two outs to put EC in front.

Franklin answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, but by the end of the second, E-town had pulled level to make it 3-3.

Ashley Hullihan and Heather Heckert were on first and second for Blass, who tripled both runners home to knot up the game in the second. Marissa Kramer gave the lead back to Elizabethtown in the fourth with an RBI single. Blass scored on the play.

Franklin had its second three-run inning of the game in the sixth to climb back on top, 6-4. An RBI double, ground out, and single brought runs home.

Elizabethtown was in business in the top of the seventh, down to its final three outs. Blass led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a passed ball with one out. Mara Rhodes also walked, and Blass was up to third on a wild pitch. Kelsey Brown stepped into the batter's box and delivered a one-out, two-RBI double to score Blass and Rhodes and tie the game at 6-6.

Hullihan, who started the second game for E-town, had a runner on second with two outs, but got the inning-ending ground out to send the game to extras.

Emma Varrato was on third with two outs in the top of the eighth after Hullihan singled her over. Blass reached on a fielding error that allowed Varrato to score on the play and give EC a 7-6 lead. Kramer, the next batter, hit a triple to score Blass and Nicole Heckert, who had come on to pinch run.

Hullihan pitched into the eighth and was one out away from getting the complete game victory. With two runners in scoring position, Brown caught the runner at second for the final out, tossing the ball to Blass to record the out.

Blass, Kramer, and Hullihan had two hits each against Franklin. Blass scored four runs while Kramer drove in a team-best three. Blass and Brown had two RBIs apiece, while Dark had the other.

The softball team will face Hanover tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and Mount Union at 11 a.m. before an off day on Tuesday.
