Wrestling downed by Johns Hopkins 34-13

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior Philip Torresani collected his 50th career victory, but shorthanded Elizabethtown, wrestling without two of its leaders, dropped its dual at Johns Hopkins, 34-13, Tuesday evening.

There's no doubt Torresani would have preferred to drop another opponent for a victory that launched him to the half century mark, but as fate would have it, Hopkins (1-5) could not fill its 125-pound slot, giving Torresani the forfeit win and improving his career record to 50-34.

Elizabethtown (1-4) opened up a 10-0 lead when freshman Colton Rex scored his first career major decision, 16-6, over Christian Vallis.

The visiting E-town Blue Jays would be held without a point over the next seven weight classes, however. The host JHU Blue Jays seized control of the match by scoring 34 unanswered points on a pin, a forfeit, three technical falls, a major decision and a decision.

Eric Eckstein secured his 14th win of the year (14-7) with a 10-3 decision over Hayden Good, allowing Elizabethtown to close the match on a high note.

Senior 197-pounder Luke Fernandez, ranked No. 3 nationally by D3wrestle.com and No. 6 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), and fifth-year senior 133-pounder Bryan Pflanz, a D3wrestle.com contender, were unavailable for the Jays. The duo has 27 wins between them this season.

Tuesday's dual at Hopkins was Elizabethtown's final competition of the fall semester. The Blue Jays return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus College.
