Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Detweiler's goal not enough for field hockey in OT loss to Kenyon

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- On paper, Wednesday's NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship First Round game between Elizabethtown and Kenyon shaped up to be a defensive battle. It delivered as advertised in the rain on Wolf Field. Kenyon scored both of its goals on corners, including the game-winner five minutes into overtime, to bring the Blue Jays' season to a close with a 2-1 loss.

The two sides, meeting for the first time, spent a lot of time in the first half jostling for possession between the shooting circles. Neither goalie faced a shot until 33:19, less than two minutes to go before halftime.

As it turned out for Elizabethtown (14-5), that first shot would result in the game's first goal. Nicole Leaf crossed the ball into the middle of the circle from the right endline and Kelsey Detweiler met the ball with her stick. The deflection, a one-time touch, found the back of the cage and E-town led 1-0 going into the half.

The Ladies (15-6) did not get off a shot attempt in the first half.

The Blue Jays controlled the beginning of the second half, and came close a few times to scoring a second goal off of penalty corners. Leaf had a shot stopped by Kenyon goalie Sarah Speroff. Allison McLamb's chance a minute later went just wide left of the cage.

The Ladies finally registered their first shot of the game in the 59th minute, and like Elizabethtown in the opening half, Kenyon found the back of the cage on its first attempt to even the score, 1-1. Shannon Hart knocked home her second of the year on a deflection from Hannah Sklar shortly after a penalty corner.

Momentum turned to Kenyon, which threatened to take the lead. The Ladies' corner inserts ran through Katelyn Hutchinson throughout the afternoon, but a handful of her shots were blocked by the Jays' defense.

Overtime was needed, a situation both teams were customary to previously. Kenyon won two OT games in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament on their way to a championship, while the Blue Jays were 4-0 in OT games, including a 1-0 victory over Susquehanna to win the Landmark crown.

The Ladies continued to push the Jays back and kept the momentum gained following Hart's tying goal.

Hannah Mack made denied a Hutchinson shot 53 seconds into the first extra session, but just over four minutes later, Kenyon took advantage of another corner opportunity.

Hutchinson sent a pass down low to Kelsey Trulik for the game-winning goal, nearly mirroring Kenyon's tying goal in the second half. Trulik, who inserted the corner, found herself with space near the left post and seized the opportunity to send her team into Saturday's Second Round at No. 2 Salisbury.

Elizabethtown, playing in --and hosting-- its first NCAA Championship tournament game since 2006, finished its season with a 14-5 overall record.
