Christman sends field hockey to Landmark Championship game

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Goucher came to play and took the Elizabethtown College field hockey team down to the wire in Wednesday's Landmark Conference semifinal matchup at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays advanced to Saturday's championship game on the very last play of the game as Emma Christman scored the game-winning goal with no time on the clock on an E-town penalty corner.

Nicole Leaf was inches away from sending Elizabethtown (13-4), the top seed for a second straight season in the Landmark, into the lead at 2:22, but her hard-hit shot drilled the post and went out of play.

Goucher (8-9) wasn't intimidated by the Blue Jays at all, and the Gophers' team speed gave E-town fits all game long. Margo Donlin stopped Goucher's first attempt on goal by Rachel Crain at 9:55.

The Gophers kept up the pressure and threatened with three straight penalty corners, but the Jays' defense held steady and did not allow a single shot.

Christman inserted an E-town penalty corner at 23:15, and 14 seconds later, was the recipient of Allison McLamb's cross. The junior knocked in the bouncing ball right in front of the goal for her ninth of the season and first of two in the game to give Elizabethtown the 1-0 advantage with under 12 minutes in the first half.

Donlin didn't face another shot the remainder of the half after stopping Emily Jewell's shot at 20:48. Hannah Mack came in for the second half.

Christman and Leaf both had goals denied by Liz Zengel early on in the second half, and the Blue Jays couldn't extend the 1-0 lead any more.

Goucher pressed high up the field and pinned Elizabethtown back. Mack made back-to-back saves on Olivia Dickert and Lizzie Barminski, smack in the middle of four straight penalty corners from Jackie Juarez.

Barminski finished off a penalty corner at 57:42 as Dickert knocked the ball toward goal that eluded Mack, and Barminski got in behind the defense and smacked it into an open goal to tie the game 1-1.

Elizabethtown took a timeout after the goal to settle things down, and it seemed to work. The Blue Jay defense, as it has done for much of the season, clamped down and did not allow the Gophers another shot.

Leaf had a shot saved by the left post that seemed destined to find the cage by Jewell. Moments later, Kubik was stopped by Zengel and the game went into the waning moments still level at 1-1.

E-town wasn't looking for overtime and neither was Christman. The Jays earned a penalty corner as the clock wound down to zeroes, and the ensuing corner was the final play of the game.

Christman inserted, as she had done the entire game. Megan Eppley received the ball, passed on to Leaf, who let go a shot toward goal. Addie Stang redirected Leaf's attempt to Christman, who was stationed at the left post. Christman wasted no time in tapping the ball into the cage for her second of the game to send Elizabethtown into Saturday's championship.

It was the second time this season against Goucher that Christman scored in the final 30 seconds of the game.

Elizabethtown will host either No. 2 seed Catholic or No. 3 seed Susquehanna in Saturday's title game. The Jays defeated both teams on Wolf Field during the regular season. Saturday's championship tilt is scheduled for 2 p.m.
