Shepherd gets decisive win over Blue Jays

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Division II Shepherd University dealt Elizabethtown men's tennis its first loss of the year Sunday in a 9-0 non-conference sweep.

The Blue Jays came closest to stealing a point at No. 2 doubles where Nathan Dowling and Nick Strobel fell to Will Wheatley and Austin Thomas by an 8-5 score.

Matthew Hornbaker and Tristan Boheim were competitive at No. 3 doubles, but were on the wrong side of an 8-4 result against the Rams' (2-1) Clayton Smith and Lewis Charette.

In singles play, freshman Connor Martin took seven games off Shane Dempsey at flight two in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.

Shepherd won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Elizabethtown finishes its abbreviated non-traditional fall season with a 1-1 record. The Blue Jays' will play a majority of their schedule, including Landmark Conference matches, in the spring of 2017.
