Blue Jays sweep singles in win at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown claimed all six singles matches Wednesday afternoon to open its fall season with a 7-2 victory at Penn State Harrisburg.

The win was the first for interim head coach Michael Lesko in his debut match leading the men's team. E-town was to open its fall schedule at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships this past weekend, but poor weather conditions forced the Jays to cancel and add a match with the Lions (2-2) at the 11th hour.

Elizabethtown (1-0) had to come from behind to get the win after ceding 2-of-3 points in doubles.

Freshman Tristan Boheim and sophomore Nick Strobel were the only ones to emerge winners in doubles, defeating John Parola and Sameer Kumar, 8-4, at No. 3.

Singles was quite a different story, however, as all six Blue Jays won their matches in straight sets.

No. 1 Alex Machalick blanked Austin Pokopec in the first set and went on to a 6-0, 6-1 win, while No. 4 Nathan Dowling was a 6-2, 6-0 victor over Parola.

Boheim cruised past Kumar at sixth singles 6-1, 6-2, and Matthew Hornbaker had little trouble with Pranoy Banka at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4.

Strobel took down Ryan McCurdy 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5. Freshman Connor Martin staved off Rafael Fernandes 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to complete the singles sweep and earn the first collegiate win of his career.

Elizabethtown is back on the court Sunday at NCAA Division II Shepherd, putting a cap on its quick non-traditional schedule. Match time is 11 a.m.
