Boretti helps keep Blue Jays in playoff picture

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Needing a win to keep its playoff dreams alive, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team had to get through Susquehanna to do so Saturday afternoon. Maria Boretti came through for the Blue Jays late in the game, scoring the game-winner with less than two minutes left to lift E-town to a 1-0 victory.

Elizabethtown (5-9, 3-3 Landmark) outplayed the River Hawks in the first half, outshooting Susquehanna (11-4, 4-2 Landmark) 4-2.

While the first two E-town attempts at goal were wide, Natalie Nye and Katrina Morales directed shots on goal in the 29th and 31st minutes, respectively. Jennifer Thorsheim saved both shots as the game went 0-0 into halftime. Hailey Parks made one save on Alyssa Bolger, SU's only shot on goal in the first 45.

Susquehanna stepped up its play in the second half and threatened to score in the 67th minute, but Parks denied a header from Bolger. Parks made a stop earlier in the half on Alee Pettit to keep it deadlocked at zeroes.

The River Hawks held E-town back in its defensive third the last ten minutes, amassing three corner kicks in that time span. Emily Sullivan and Alex Edelman each had opportunities, but their shots were either high or wide.

Boretti seized the game for the Jays at 88:23 with her first of the season. E-town had earned a free kick which resulted in the game-winning goal from the junior back.

Elizabethtown moves into a fourth-place tie with Moravian, who still has a game-in-hand and the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Blue Jays. E-town will host Penn St. Berks on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. before finishing up the regular season with Senior Day at Ira R. Herr Field against Juniata on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
