Haaf, Waso tally as men's soccer ties Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Gilbert Waso and JD Haaf handled the scoring for the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team in its Landmark Conference matchup at Susquehanna Saturday afternoon. The River Hawks pulled level with less than ten minutes to go and neither team could produce in the extra sessions and finished in a 2-2 tie. E-town remained unbeaten and still atop the conference standings at 4-0-2.

It was all Elizabethtown (11-2-2, 4-0-2 Landmark) through the first 15 minutes of play with three corner kicks and an opportunity on goal from Anders Thomsen that was saved by starting keeper Matt Ellingworth.

In the 16th minute, however, Waso struck like he has done 12 previous times this season. The speedy forward beat his defender and got in on Ellingworth and put his shot into the back of the net for his team and league-leading 13th of the season.

Susquehanna (6-7-2, 3-1-1 Landmark) got even in the 23rd minute on Eric Dempsey's goal, just the second shot of the game for the River Hawks to that point.

E-town had one final chance in the first half to break the tie, but Sam Feehrer's shot was saved by Ellingworth.

Haaf sent the Jays back into the lead in the 64th minute after E-town had outshot Susquehanna 7-1 in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Feehrer provided the assist, his Landmark-leading seventh of the year.

Ryan Cronin was stopped by Ryan Sandell 18 seconds after Haaf's goal as SU nearly tied it up once again. Cronin delivered for the Hawks late in the game, the 83rd minute, to force overtime.

Waso tried for his second of the game and send E-town home winners, but Ellingworth made the save in the 96th minute. Sandell came through for the Blue Jays in the second session, stopping Zachary Goodwin from giving the hosts the OT win.

The men's soccer team will have the week off before hosting Juniata for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. The game will mark the end of the regular season for the Blue Jays.
