Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey stays unbeaten in Landmark, wins wild one with Susquehanna

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Not known for high-scoring contests, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team put up at least six goals for the second time in three games against visiting Susquehanna Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field in a crucial Landmark Conference battle. The win capped off E-town's Senior Day and the seniors played an important role, accounting for five of the team's six goals.

Elizabethtown (10-4, 6-0 Landmark) came out guns blazing from the opening whistle and put Susquehanna (13-3, 4-2 Landmark) on its heels in the first seven minutes.

A penalty corner less than a minute in led to shots from Charity Good and Allison McLamb. Both were stopped by Emily DiGaetano. Halley Donlin had two more shots stopped off a corner a few minutes later.

Olivia Beachley broke the scoreless tie at 6:48 with her second of the season. Emma Christman found the freshman near the left post and Beachley finished off the play to put E-town up 1-0.

The River Hawks did not take long to respond. The league's top offense broke through 1:19 after Beachley's goal to make it 1-1. Emily Novakovich slapped a pass down to Mini Kofolo after Kofolo inserted SU's penalty corner.

From that point, Elizabethtown took control the rest of the first half. It started on McLamb's fifth goal of the season after she collected a ball that rang off the post from Megan Eppley's shot.

Three minutes later, Nicole Leaf recorded her first of two goals in the game. Leaf inserted to Eppley, who dished back to Leaf. Leaf took the pass and beat DiGaetano to make it 3-1.

Leaf returned the favor to her junior teammate with less than five to go in the first half. Leaf inserted E-town's seventh and final penalty corner of the first half out to Eppley, who sent her ensuing shot left of the Susquehanna goalie to increase to advantage to 4-1.

Landmark leading scoring Hunter Pitman cut the deficit in half just over a minute into the second half as Susquehanna came out with a purpose.

The Jays got the goal back less than one minute later as Leaf registered her second career multi-goal game (10/21/14 vs. Ferrum) of her career with her second of the game off Eppley's second assist of the afternoon.

The River Hawks still couldn't be counted out of it, though. Pitman grabbed her second of the contest at 41:16 to make it 5-3 and put the pressure back on E-town.

The pressure did mount as Susquehanna searched for another goal. Emily Novakovich eventually provided it a little over two minutes after Pitman's goal and suddenly it was a one-goal game at 5-4 with 17 minutes left to play and momentum surely on Susquehanna's side.

Novakovich's goal would prove to be the final shot of the game for the Hawks and the Blue Jay defense locked down. Elizabethtown would only get one more shot over that span, but the Jays made it worth it as Kelsey Detweiler sealed the Jays' victory with 2:31 left. Emma Christman led a rush down the left side and as the last defender came to play the junior, she squared a pass over to Detweiler. The senior avoided Morgan Ludlam in goal and scored her second of the season to ensure Elizabethtown's undefeated streak in the Landmark continued.

Hannah Mack started for E-town and made three saves in the first 35 minutes. Margo Donlin played the second half and also made three saves. Mack got the win and moved to 4-1 on the season.

The field hockey team will travel to Rowan on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for its final non-conference game of the season. The Jays round out the regular season next Saturday, Oct. 29 at Juniata.
