Women's soccer triumphant on Homecoming

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Saturday's Homecoming matchup was a tale of two halves for the Elizabethtown women's soccer team.

The Blue Jays struggled to generate much over the first 45 minutes, but flew around the field in the final 45. They were finally rewarded with a timely bounce in the 85th minute, getting an own goal to down Goucher 1-0 and strengthen their postseason hopes.

While the result of the play may have been on the lucky side, Lindsay Hoagland's corner kick inadvertently hitting off Goucher's Sara Kast and finding its way across the line, the serve into the box by Hoagland could have just as easily found one of several Blue Jays in the area.

It was a result the Blue and Gray (4-9, 2-3 Landmark) seemingly deserved after taking the game to the Gophers (6-6-1, 1-3) in the second half.

Elizabethtown pumped five shots in the direction of Goucher keeper Lexi Rudolph after halftime, compared to just one for the Gophers.

Blue Jays leading scorer Lydia Lawson shared the team lead in shots with Morgan Chambers, each player registering two. Lawson's speed created issues for the Gophers throughout the afternoon.

Two minutes into the second half, Lawson found herself with a great opportunity, but her shot was just left of the goal. Rudolph stopped headers from Chambers and Sophie McKnight in the first 15 minutes of the second as well.

Elizabethtown briefly moved into the fourth and final conference playoff spot, before Moravian defeated Catholic, 2-1, later Saturday to match the Jays in the win column with two.

Moravian does hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over E-town and have two games in hand, however.

E-town keeper Hailey Parks wasn't tested often, but did her part as a vocal leader in the back and made one save in each half for her fourth shutout of the year.

The Blue Jays now have a week to get ready for next Saturday's 1 p.m. tilt at Susquehanna.
