Feehrer's golden goal gives Blue Jays Homecoming win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Homecoming 2016 had its happy ending, but Elizabethtown wasn't able to exhale until Sam Feehrer's shot in the 104th minute screamed past Goucher keeper Daniel Hendry to give the Jays a 1-0 double overtime victory Saturday.

Feehrer and the Jays (10-2-1, 4-0-1 Landmark) absolutely dominated possession and spent a majority of the game on the attack. Anything less than a win would have felt hollow for the home side in front of a raucous Homecoming crowd.

Elizabethtown's relentless pressure combined with Goucher's packed in defense resulted in 33 shots for the Blue Jays, their most since taking 33 against Juniata on Oct. 29, 2003, nearly 13 years ago.

Hendry did his part to ensure the Gophers (6-4-5, 1-2-2) remained in the game. The Landmark leader in saves coming into Saturday added eight to his total to go over 100 (101) for the season.

Hendry could only lunge in vain, however, as Feehrer's shot from just outside the top of the 18-yard box zipped into the upper left corner to win it for the Jays at 103:09 and set off a wild celebration. Gilbert Waso assisted on the winner.

Senior forward Jeff Light cranked out a career-high 11 shots, becoming the first player to record 10 shots or more in a game since Feehrer's 12 at Goucher last Oct. 21. The current teammates are the only Blue Jays with 10+ shot games since 2003. Waso added seven and Feehrer four. Eleven different players had at least one shot Saturday.

Goalkeeper Ryan Sandell stopped all four Gopher shots on goal for the shutout. Goucher had just five shots in the contest and the Blue Jays also held a 6-1 edge in corners.

The Blue Jays have now won three straight Homecoming games and are 16-0-1 on Homecoming since 1997.

Elizabethtown plays its final regular season non-conference game Wednesday at Lancaster Bible. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
