Late PK dooms women's soccer at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson's second-half goal tied things up for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team at Moravian Wednesday night, but a late penalty kick goal by the Greyhounds was enough to beat the Blue Jays, 2-1.

Gabby Stelzmiller forced Hailey Parks into an early save in the fifth minute, one of five in the game for the Elizabethtown (3-9, 1-3 Landmark) goalkeeper.

Chelsea Dantona had E-town's first chance of the game in the seventh minute, but Jessica Lawton stopped her shot on frame.

Paige Weiss scored for Moravian (5-4-1, 1-1 Landmark), her first of the season, after heading home a corner kick with 37:06 left in the first half to make it 1-0. The Greyhounds led 1-0 at the half.

The first scoring opportunity of the second half went to the Jays as Katrina Morales' attempt was saved by Lawton, but the rebound came to Lawson, who buried her chance and tied the game 1-1 in the 49th minute.

Morales nearly gave E-town the lead in the 60th minute, but her shot rang off the crossbar. Lawson's header minutes later was stopped by Lawton.

Moravian picked up the pace as the game neared its end, threatening to break the deadlock and avoid overtime. The Greyhounds were awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute and Val. Margiottiello converted to make it 2-1 with only a few minutes left in regulation.

The Blue Jays would not be able to generate another scoring chance before the second half clock ran out.

Elizabethtown will host Goucher on Homecoming this Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
