Wrestlers win a pair at North-South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Elizabethtown wrestling split four matches at the North-South Duals Saturday at Ursinus College. The Blue Jays defeated Oneonta and McDaniel, dropped a close match with Worcester Polytechnic Institute and fell to No. 18 Stevens.

ELIZABETHTOWN 27, ONEONTA 18

Elizabethtown led from start-to-finish in its opening dual Saturday. The Jays took four of the first five matches, with major decisions from Philip Torresani (125), Chad Lammer (149) and Chris Kummerer (157). Quinn Ruble added a pin at 174 and E-town avenged a loss to the Red Dragons at last year's North-South Duals.

Oneonta cut the Jays' lead to 15-12 after a forfeit at 165, but Ruble pinned Shaun Gillen, Rocco Hladney took an 8-3 decision over Vincent Provenzano at 184 and Luke Fernandez began a 4-0 day with a decision over Peter Pjetri to secure the win for Elizabethtown.

WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE 21, ELIZABETHTOWN 19

WPI stole one from the Blue Jays late, as Nick Day's fall at 4:13 of the heavyweight match lifted his team to a 21-19 victory.

Bryan Pflanz used a major decision at 133 to put the Blue Jays up early and Quinn Ruble had a fall over Lucas Muntz at 174 for E-town.

D3wrestle.com Honorable Mention Chad Lammer grabbed an 11-5 decision over Jack Nigro at 149, but the Blue Jays were without the services of Chad's brother, Mike Lammer, throughout the duals. Mike Lammer is 13-1 on the season at 141 pounds and is also receiving HM accolades from d3wrestle.com.

Following Ruble's pin at 174, Rocco Hladney and d3wrestle.com Contender Luke Fernandez came up with decisions to put E-town ahead 19-15. Needing to hold WPI to just a decision to take the win, the Jays were unable to do it. Day's pin midway through the second period (4:13) against Nikolay Savin flipped the match in the Engineers' favor.

ELIZABETHTOWN 20, McDANIEL 18

Philip Torresani got the match started with a big pin over Jake Rendelman at 125 lbs. (5:58), while Chad Lammer (149) and Chris Kummerer (157) secured bonus points with consecutive major decisions as Elizabethtown held off McDaniel for its second win of the day.

McDaniel owned a 15-14 lead after Luke Yox earned a decision at 174, but Rocco Hladney and Luke Fernandez came through late. Both won by decision to push E-town back in front 20-15. Elizabethtown could ill afford to give up a pin in the heavyweight match, and though the result went McDaniel's way in the bout, the Blue Jays held the Green Terror to a decision to escape with the two-point victory.
