Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

43-point second half carries Scranton past Blue Jays

SCRANTON, Pa. – Elizabethtown played Scranton tight over the opening 20 minutes Saturday afternoon, one of the best halves of basketball for the Blue Jays this season. The Royals would open it up after halftime, though, netting 43 points on their way to a 79-50 victory at the Long Center.

A layup from Jalil Pines-Elliott at the 12:49 mark of the first half put the visitors in front 13-12 and for much of the half, the Blue Jays (2-9, 0-3 Landmark) were able to hang right with a Royals team receiving votes in the latest D3Hoops.com Top 25.

Even when Scranton (9-2, 2-1) countered with a 13-3 run over the next 4:27, E-town found a way back. Peter Harding scored five of his nine points, while Jake Sweger and Jamil Pines-Elliott also had points in a 9-0 run for the Blue and Gray that tied the game at 25 with 6:07 left.

The Royals found themselves up 36-29 at the break, finishing the first half on an 11-4 run. John Vitkus led all Scranton players with nine points and Kevin Doolan added eight.

Tommy James scored two of his team-high 16 points off a feed from Matt Lane to trim Scranton's lead to 42-37 with 15:23 remaining, but the Royals dominated the next 10 minutes.

A four-point play from Doolan started a run of seven straight points by the sophomore guard. Brendan Boken then ripped off six straight, extending Scranton's lead to 55-41 with just under 11 minutes to play.

Scranton's lead would grow as large as 29 at the final horn, the Royals outscoring E-town 43-21 in the second half.

James snagged five rebounds and was 8-of-10 from the floor, but was the only Blue Jay to score in double figures. Harding had nine points, three rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes after drawing his second straight start, and freshman Dylan Krieger posted nine points and two blocks.

Lane returned to the lineup after missing the Delaware Valley game back on Dec. 15. He matched Harding for the team-high in assists with three and also grabbed a pair of rebounds. Elizabethtown played its third straight game without injured leading scorer Matt Lapkowicz.

Sweger hauled in a team-high seven rebounds for E-town.

Four of the Royals' five starters were in double figures led by Doolan's 17 points. Boken had 16 and 11 boards, with Ethan Danzig and Vitkus chipping in 15 points apiece.

Boken came up two assists shy of a triple-double and Doolan also had a big afternoon distributing the ball with six dimes.

E-town heads to Catholic Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the unanimous No. 1 pick in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
