Lane with career-high eight assists, Jays fall to Goucher

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior point guard Matt Lane handed out a career-high eight dimes, but it wasn't enough to slow down Kevin Miles-led Goucher, which collected its second straight victory and sent E-town to its ninth straight defeat, 100-69, at Thompson Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Lane finished with four assists in each half and surpassed his former career-high of seven, set earlier this season against Franciscan.

Tommy James scored the Blue Jays' first six points and Josh Eden added six of his own in the early going. Elizabethtown (2-14, 0-8 Landmark) came out strong and actually led by a pair, 17-15 after Dylan Krieger's three-point play with 12:13 to go in the first half.

Goucher, fresh off its first conference win of the season –a 99-85 overtime win over Moravian– this past Wednesday, would take control from there. The Gophers scored 19 unanswered points over the next 4:08 to take a 17-point lead and would hang 53 on the Jays before the break.

E-town had no answer for Miles, who scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. The Jays knocked down the first two shots of the second half to briefly cut Goucher's lead to 14, but the visitors quickly expanded their advantage into the 20s and as high as 31.

Peter Harding paced the Jays with 17 points, while Eden had 14. Jamil Pines-Elliott and Krieger had 10 apiece to join Harding and Eden in double figures.

Goucher dominated the boards, hauling in 43 rebounds to E-town's 25. At the offensive end, the Gophers collected 14 rebounds and turned them into 14 second-chance points. Goucher also converted 16 Blue Jay turnovers into 23 points.

Miles led five Gophers in double figures. Mychal Stefanides and Norman Allen II recorded 13 points each, Ed Oliver had 11 and Troy DeShields 10.

The Blue Jays will turn around and play Merchant Marine less than 48 hours from now in a rare Monday matinee at 2 p.m.
