Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey's home opener spoiled by Muhlenberg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — In a game with three ties and two lead changes, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Muhlenberg battled in the heat Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field. The Mules were able to get a pair of second half goals and outlast the Blue Jays, 4-3. E-town had three different players record goals in the loss.

Elizabethtown (0-2) nearly had the lead within the first few minutes of the non-conference contest. Jacki Hikes inserted the ball off the Jays' first penalty corner, which came to the stick of Alyssa Aichele. Aichele guided the ball just wide of the cage.

Muhlenberg (1-1) converted its first shot of the game into a goal as Alexandria DeAngelo got her first tally of the year, deflecting the ball into the left side of the cage on a feed from the right by Taylor Smith.

The Blue Jays weren't down for long, bringing the game to its first tie almost exactly four minutes after the Mules' goal. Muhlenberg goalie stopped Emma Christman's shot attempt, but Aichele was there to collect the rebound off the shot and direct it into the goal.

Smith and DeAngelo teamed up to record the Mules' second of the game, this time with Smith doing the scoring, getting her stick onto the ball and sending it high up into the cage.

The lead was short-lived as Christman knotted it up at 2-2 just 14 seconds later. Hikes crossed the ball back across goal, where it found Christman's stick and the sophomore finished off the play with her first goal of the year.

E-town grabbed its first lead of the game on Hikes' first of the season. Aichele took the ball in near the left side of goal, pushed it across the mouth of the cage, and Hikes ran onto it at the far post for the easy score.

Elizabethtown had the momentum after taking the one-goal lead, but were unable to tack on another goal. Muhlenberg began possessing the ball, working it around the field and it ultimate paid off in a game-tying goal.

Rachel Strow took the Mules' penalty corner and sent it out top. The ball took a few deflections around goal, and in the scramble in front, Strow came up with the ball and deposited it into the cage to tie the game, her first of the year.

Time began playing a factor and both teams were wearing down because of the heat. With less than ten minutes to go, Muhlenberg was pressuring for a fourth goal and were awarded a penalty stroke. Laura Holdman stepped up to take it and just beat E-town goalie Hannah Mack to the left side of the cage, giving the visitors the lead at 4-3.

Knowing it had to push for the game-tying goal, the Jays ramped up the offensive pressure in the final minutes, but could not get by the Mules' final line of defense.

Claire Notarianni finished with three saves, while Mack also had three in her first collegiate start.

Elizabethtown travels to face York (Pa.) on Wednesday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m.
