Women's soccer comes up short against Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team couldn't ride the momentum it had established from the recent win over ranked Misericordia this past Wednesday. The Blue Jays dropped a 2-1 decision at home to Catholic Saturday afternoon. Kaceyanne Cerankowski scored her fourth of the season for the Jays.

Elizabethtown (4-4-1, 0-1 Landmark)) was under pressure from the first whistle as Catholic's (7-2, 1-0 Landmark) poised midfield controlled possession of the ball and came at the Jays' defense.

Though the Cardinals had three corners in the opening five minutes, nothing came from them. Landmark goal leader Lindsay Aleman nearly had the visitors on the board through the run of play, though, as her shot trickled toward an open goal, but Lauren Fredericks was able to clear the ball away off the line.

Cerankowski, who has been on a recent hot streak in point production, dribbled in on Catholic goalie Lexi Halperin from the left side, but the keeper gave the senior winger little to shoot at, saving Cerankowski's shot in the 31st minute.

The Cardinals bottled up the middle of the field for the Blue Jays and didn't allow another shot on goal the remainder of the half. The teams went into the break scoreless.

Aleman began the second-half scoring with her league-leading 11th of the season in the 55th minute, poking the ball away from a defender, racing in on goal and chipping the goalie.

Dana Robidoux did all she could, making seven saves total, including a sprawling save later on in the game to keep the Jays within striking distance. Catholic's Jillian Sudo had made it 2-0 in the 68th minute.

E-town was able to snap the shutout in the 82nd minute as Cerankowski was tackled in the box. The senior then stepped up to take the PK and buried it into the lower right corner past the fingertips of Halperin. Halperin had four saves in the game.

The women's soccer team heads to York (Pa.) to face the Spartans on Wednesday, September 30 at 4:30 p.m.
