Aichele's OT goal sends field hockey past No. 12 Catholic for 600th win

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alyssa Aichele scored 4:49 into overtime, completing the comeback over 12th-ranked Catholic Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital, 3-2, and giving Elizabethtown College field hockey its 600th win all-time.

The nationally recognized Cardinals took the play to E-town (4-3, 1-0 Landmark) early, holding a 6-0 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in penalty corners through the first 18 minutes, but the play of freshman goalie Margo Donlin kept the Blue Jays afloat.

Donlin stopped the first seven CUA shots on goal as the game remained scoreless into the late stages of the first half.

Catholic was finally able to solve the Wilmington, Del., native when Hayley Wright scored off a pass from Rachel Day at 27:24 of the half. It would be all the Cardinals would get before the break, though. Donlin's work was instrumental in keeping Elizabehttown alive, as the visitors were outshot 13-1 in the period.

Just over four minutes into the second, the Cards (5-3, 0-1 Landmark) found the back of the cage again with Day doing the honors. Molly Crowley assisted.

The game changed in E-town's favor over a three-minute stretch 13 minutes later. First, Kelsey Detweiler put the Jays on the board at the 46:13 mark to cut Catholic's lead in half. Then, Jacki Hikes tied it at 49:15 off a pass from Aichele. Nothing else would be settled in the final 20 minutes of regulation, putting the Blue Jays in overtime for the first time this season.

Catholic would get a quick shot to start OT, but it was blocked and the hosts never threatened again. E-town would earn a penalty corner at 74:45 and off that corner, Aichele ripped a shot high into the left side of the net by Cardinals' goalie Analisa Scott for the win.

Elizabethtown has won four of its last five games after an 0-2 start and this one was especially big. Catholic, winners of the Landmark championship in 2011, 2012 and 2013, has been to each of the last six championship games going back to 2010. The program eclipsed a new milestone with its 600th win, as well.

Aichele finished with three shots on the day and Nicole Leaf had two. Catholic held nearly a 2:1 shot advantage with 19 to the Jays' 10. E-town was able to close the gab slightly with an 8-5 advantage in the second half and out-cornered the Cardinals 4-2 over the second half and overtime.

E-town returns to Wolf Field Tuesday afternoon for a 4:30 non-conference game against Eastern.
