Defense, set pieces help women's soccer topple #11 Misericordia

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — For the second straight meeting on Ira R. Herr Field, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team toppled nationally-ranked Misericordia with a combination of hard-working defense and capitalizing on set pieces. The Blue Jays held on for the 2-1 non-conference victory Wednesday evening on goals by Kaceyanne Cerankowski and Lauren Berry.

Two years ago, Elizabethtown (4-3-1) played Misericordia (6-2) tough at home and used a Cerankowski 64th-minute goal to hang on against the Cougars, who were also ranked in the NSCAA Division III poll then, too.

On Wednesday, the Jays had the first cracks at goal. An early header from Lauren Fredericks was directed wide of the goal before Trisha Clark's shot in the 11th minute had to be saved by goalie Maureen Ciccosanti.

After Misericordia, No. 11 in the latest NSCAA poll, recorded its first shot, Cerankowski haunted the Cougars defense once again on home turf, burying a shot in the 14th minute for her third of the season. Maddie Burkhardt's corner found the head of Maria Boretti on the far side of the six-yard box. The sophomore headed it back across goal, where Cerankowski brought it down and touched it through a crowded goal mouth for the tally.

The back four of Fredericks, Boretti, Caroline Novak, and Lindsay Hoagland did well to halt much of the Misericordia attack. The defense limited the Cougars to seven shots over the 90 minutes, well below the season average of 15.1 for MU. Dana Robidoux only needed to make three saves for the win.

Knowing Misericordia would attempt to come out of the break on a mission, Elizabethtown held its own and played with solid spells of possession to break up the Cougars' efforts.

The 50th minute proved vital as E-town doubled its lead off the boot of Berry. The senior latched on to a rebound and drove it top shelf to put EC up 2-0. Cerankowski's initial shot off another Jays' corner went toward the far post, but Misericordia's Evelyn Logie was able to keep it out. However, the ball did not get far as Berry was in the right place at the right time to smash it home.

The Cougars did draw a goal back in the 67th minute. A quick restart off a foul in the midfield caught the Blue Jay defense off guard, and Jacqueline Stevens slotted a ball through the middle to Rileigh Jo Evitts, who took a few touches into the box and chipped the goalie to bring the visitors within one.

E-town kept its composure in the back and did not allow another shot over the final 25 minutes of the contest to pull off its second straight home victory over ranked Misericordia. It was the Jays first win over a ranked opponent this season.

The women's soccer team will look to ride the momentum into Saturday's Landmark Conference opener at home against Catholic at 1 p.m.
